Carrollton’s Arianna Garcia knows how to step it up when it counts the most.

Garcia did that again on Thursday, making history and picking up two more gold medals to cap her strong career at the Class 2A state track and field championships at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville.

Garcia, a senior who is headed to the University of Miami, set a state meet record in the 400 hurdles with a time of 59.46 seconds and also won the state championship in the 100 hurdles in 14.05 seconds.

Garcia doubled up, winning state titles in both events, for the second consecutive season.

Garcia and junior Gabriela Socarras led the Cyclones to a third-place finish in the overall girls’ team standings with 42 points. Unfortunately for Carrollton, those were only half the points put up by co-champions Jacksonville Bolles and Montverde Academy.

Socarras secured the only other state title for Carrollton, winning the 800-meters with a time of 2:09.70.

Carrollton’s 1,600-meter relay finished third and its 3,200-meter relay placed fourth.

Calvary Christian was the highest placing South Florida team on the boys’ side as it tied for second with Palatka with 34 points. Jacksonville Raines cruised to the boys’ title with 83 points.

OTHER WINNERS

There were four other South Florida athletes combined, who brought home gold at the Class 2A meet and 1A meet held on Wednesday.

La Salle senior Pablo Aldecoa secured a state championship in the boys’ 400-meter hurdles with a time of 52.95. Aldecoa, who moved to Miami from Boston before this season, became the first boys individual state champion for the Royal Lions since pole vaulter Jose Cernuda in 1992.

Pine Crest junior Elizabeth Sauby secured a state championship in the javelin with a winning throw of 43.27 meters. It was Sauby’s first state title, and she edged teammate Rowan Sundevall, who placed second with a throw of 37.73.

Gulliver sophomore Ellie Schnur finished in a three-way tie for first place to share honors in the high jump. Schnur jumped a height of 1.57 meters to finish tied with Palatka’s Kendall Wilkinson and Jacksonville Bishop Kenny’s Madeleine Wilkey.

Westminster Academy junior Joshua Williams was the lone state champion from Broward County at the Class 1A meet. Williams won the long jump state title with a jump of 7.08 meters. Westminster Academy tied for sixth place, which was the highest team finish at the 1A meet.
