Belen, Dillard win region track titles. Plus region boys’ volleyball, golf event, hoops honors

The Belen Jesuit boys’ track & field team won the Region 4-3A Championship at the Ansin Sports Complex in Miramar.

The Wolverines scored 130.5 points to earn the regional title for the third consecutive season. Dillard was third, followed by Northeast and Miami Northwestern.

Leading the championship effort was junior Marcelo Mantecon, who took first place in the 1600 M at 4:21.10 and the 3200 M at 9:17.80 and was the anchor on the winning 4x800-meter relay at 8:00.43.

Joining him in the relay victory were Dominic De Armas, Armando Cruz and Jack Michalak.

Other event winners for Belen were Michalak (800 M - 1:54.81) and Jaime Saavedra (Javelin - 184-feet, 10-inches). Michalak also was runner-up in the 1,600 M (4:21.26).

Mantecon’s younger sister, Marisa, won a region title for Lourdes in the girls’ 1,600 M race.

Belen had 13 athletes and two relays advance to the FHSAA State Championships on Friday, May 8 at the University of North Florida in Jacksonville.

Miami Northwestern was runner-up with 78 points, 50 points behind Dillard and four points ahead of Lourdes.

Region boys’ volleyball

The Belen Jesuit boys’ volleyball team won a 5-set thriller, defeating Pembroke Pines Charter 22-25, 16-25, 25-14, 28-26, 15-12 in a Region 4-2A semifinal.

Top players for the 23-6 Wolverines were: Billy Essig 25 kills 439 hitting percentage, 11 digs, 4 aces, 4 blocks; Justin Garcia 11 kills, 2 blocks, 2 digs; Jeremy Garcia 10 kills, 3 blocks, 3 digs.

Top players for the 14-7 Jaguars were: Daniel Castro 24 kills, 2 blocks, 3 aces; Adrian Navarro 16 kills, 1 block, 5 aces; Gabriel Castro 60 assists, 2 blocks, 1 kill, 1 ace.

Belen advances to the region finals at home on Friday against 23-5 Varela, a 3-set winner over Reagan 25-23, 28-26, 25-15.

Archbishop McCarthy (19-8) hosts St. Thomas Aquinas (18-9) in the Region 3-2A final.

More region boys’ volleyball

The Divine Savior boys’ volleyball team (16-4) defeated Chaminade-Madonna to advance to the Region 3-1A finals, where it will face Monsignor Pace on Friday.

This marks the Sharks’ second consecutive region final in just the program’s second season.

Pace (16-2) beat Greater Miami Academy and Downtown Doral, both in straight sets, to reach the region final.

Somerset Academy Silver Palms Miami defeated Sunset and LaSalle, also both in straight sets, to advance to the Region 4-1A final.

Golf

With all kind of excitement surrounding the return of former Miami Springs, FIU and NFL star T.Y. Hilton to Miami Springs High School as its new football coach, the Hawks’ football team will hold a benefit fundraiser golf tournament Friday at the Miami Springs Golf and Country Club.

Hilton, a two-sport star at Springs from 2004-07, and a Miami Herald First Team All-Dade selection in football and basketball his senior season, went on to star at FIU before being drafted by the Indianapolis Colts in 2012. Hilton would go on to become a five-time Pro Bowl selection over the next nine seasons.

Entry for the tournament is $200 per golfer or $750 for a foursome which includes greens fee, shared cart, swag bag, beverages and a post-tournament dinner. Hilton will be a special guest of the tournament. Check-in time is noon followed by a 1 p.m. shotgun start. Sponsorship opportunities are also available via tee signs, carts and event sponsors.

Basketball honors

Source Hoops presents the 2025-26 Boys’ Class 6A and Class 7A All-State Teams. These players represent the best of the best for those schools that participate in Class 6A and Class 7A.

Players were selected based on in-person evaluations, a review of all-area teams selected by media from around the state, and without regard to a player’s travel team or high school affiliation or his ranking by other outlets.
