Region tennis champs ready for state. Lourdes tennis, Reagan volleyball make history and more

The Doral Academy boys’ tennis team won a 4A region championship by beating Miami Palmetto 4-1.

Gabriel Cottone at No.2 singles came-from-behind in a big battle for the match clinching win, which meant no doubles needed to determine a team winner.

Prior, Doral was the District 15 winner, and Palmetto won District 16, qualifying for regionals.

The Firebirds improved to 15-1 and sport a Top 20 national ranking, according to UTR.

Doral beat No.10 St. Andrew’s (Boca Raton), No.2 American Heritage (Delray) and now Miami Palmetto, three national powerhouses. The Firebirds lone loss was to No.9 True North, which competes in 1A.

Doral will battle Central Florida-based powerhouse Lake Nona in the FHSAA Class 4A State Tournament. Lake Nona, ranked eighth, beat the Firebirds in last year’s state final.

Cypress Bay, ranked 13th nationally, is in the state Final Four, too. Doral beat Cypress Bay in the state final in 2024.

No.1: Samuel Rosales (Dor) d. Beau Gibson (Plm) 6-4, 6-4.

No.2: Gabriel Cottone (Dor) d. Xander Cruz 2-6, 6-1, (11-9, clinching match).

No.3: Hanno Niemeier (Plm) d. Vincenzo Palmiotto 2-6, 6-4 (10-5).

No.4: Eric Echeverria (Dor) d. Leon Conejeros 6-0, 6-0.

No.5: Alan Shum (Dor) d. Darren Wolcot 6-0, 6-1.

BOYS: 4A Region Semifinal: Doral Academy 4, Ferguson 0.

BOYS: 4A Region Semifinal: Miami Palmetto 4, Columbus 0.

*Cypress Bay made it a region championship sweep with the boys’ team edging Boca Raton 4-3 and the girls’ team beating Stoneman Douglas 4-1 in another 4A region final.

In region semifinals, the Lightning boys beat Stoneman Douglas 4-0 and the girls defeated Western 4-0.

Girls’ region tennis

The Miami Palmetto girls’ tennis team edged Doral Academy 4-3 in a marathon battle to win a 4A region championship.

This match took more than four hours to determine a winner, and it marked the third consecutive season Palmetto beat Doral.

Doral had two match points at 9-7 in the super-tiebreaker at No.2 doubles, which would have sent the Firebirds to state, but Miami Palmetto’s Mariangel Pernia and Pearlyn Chewputtanagul denied the Firebirds en route to the exciting, match clinching win.

Doral (14-2) ended the season as the No.10 ranked team in the country, according to UTR.

Miami Palmetto is looking to repeat as Class 4A state champs. Palmetto also won state in 2018 and 2023.

More region tennis

For the first time in school history, the Lourdes girls’ tennis team won a region championship.

The Bobcats defeated St. Thomas Aquinas in a 3A region final.

*True North swept the region tennis titles in a 1A region. That makes five consecutive region championships for each program (boys and girls).

No.1 singles: Luciana Chica (TN) d. Sasha Kilgore 6-1, 6-0.

No.1 doubles: Luciana Chica/Isa Portillo (TN) d. Sasha Kilgore/Leyla Kilgore 6-3, 6-1.

GIRLS: 1A Region Semifinal: True North 4, Divine Savior 0.

*The Gulliver Prep girls’ tennis team won a 2A region championship by beating MAST 4-1.

Winning were: No.1 Mika Ringel (GP) 6-3, 4-6, (10-7); No.2 Beatriz Cristofaro (M) 7-5, 6-3; No.3 Valentina Donoso (GP) 6-3, 6-3; No.4 Hanna Matuk (GP) 6-4, 6-3; No.5 Juliette Le Bona (GP) 6-0, 6-1.

NOTE: The FHSAA State Championships are now through May 1 in (Central Florida) Seminole County.

Sanlando Park, Red Bug Lake Park and Sylvan Lake Park the host sites.

Region lacrosse

The Belen Jesuit boys’ lacrosse team rolled to a 17-2 victory over NSU University School in a Region 4-1A Quarterfinal.

Adrian Navarro led the offense with 3 goals and 3 assists, and Jack Consuegra added 3 goals and 1 assist. Lorenzo Magarino contributed 3 goals, and Matias Cabanas and Santino Dejongh chipped in 2 goals each.

Jaime Torres totaled 1 goal and 3 assists, and additional goals were from Luke Collings, Mike Gonzalez and AJ Garcia.

At the faceoff X, Jack Guitian, Ben Portela and Christian Jurado controlled possession throughout the game, setting the tone early.

In net, Adrian Bertorelli recorded 10 saves to anchor a strong defense.

The Wolverines (19-2) advance to a region semifinal where they will face Pine Crest, 19-2 winners over Westminster Christian. Pine Crest is 16-4.

District boys’ volleyball

The Reagan boys’ volleyball team won the district title for the first time in program history by defeating Mater Academy Charter 21-25, 25-16, 27-25, 25-13 in the District 14-2A final.

After dropping the first set, the Bison tied the match in the second set. They then overcame a critical moment by saving two set points against them in the third—a turning point that ultimately paved the way for this history-making victory.
