District tennis results; Belen, Westminster district lacrosse; Southwest baseball and more
District tennis champions were crowned with No.1 singles and No.1 doubles winners automatically qualifying for state.
In the team division, district champs and district runners-up advance to regionals.
For the 28th consecutive season, the Miami Country Day boys’ tennis team won the district championship.
Riviera Prep girls won the District 16-1A title in an 11-team field and history made for Westminster Christian tennis.
Plenty of program team sweeps as noted below by the usual state contenders.
DISTRICT 16-1A
True North is a young athletic program that continues to do well in a short period of time. The boys’ won the district championship for the fifth consecutive season, while Riviera Prep won the girls’ team title.
True North features Zander Guevara (Sr), Krishang Badwal (Sr), Tomas Rheault (Jr), Dan Horowitz (Jr), and Caleb Chow (Sr).
For the first time in school history, Westminster Christian celebrated a doubles team advancing to the state championships by winning districts. No.1 boys’ doubles district champs Gabriel Delgado and Jose Padron, two seniors, earned their place among the top competitors in the state. Teammate Santiago Delgado, a 7th grader who is Gabriel’s brother, was runner-up at No.5 singles.

Somerset-Pembroke Pines senior Patricia Acra won at No.1 girls’ singles, and American Heritage-Plantation’s Motian Qian and Alejandro Palacios won at No.1 boys’ doubles to avoid a Pine Crest clean sweep.

DISTRICT 15-3A
St. Thomas Aquinas tennis delivered a dominant performance at the district championships with the boys’ and girls’ teams sweeping the team titles.
On the boys side, the Raiders swept Pembroke Pines Charter in singles play. Conor Reeser battled to a 7-6, 6-2 win at No.1, while Philip Paun secured a 6-3, 6-4 victory at No.2. Anthony Nikolov, Mateo Quiroz and Jacobo Santamaria each delivered commanding 6-0, 6-0 wins to complete a boys’ singles sweep. Reeser and Santamaria were runners-up in No.1 doubles.
For the girls, Rowan Cicero finished as district runner-up after falling in the finals to Archbishop McCarthy’s Jessica McLean, while Alexis Bai (8-4) and Annika Hahn (8-3) earned strong wins over Archbishop McCarthy opponents. Ana Sarrago placed runner-up with a 6-2, 6-3 finals setback, and Anna Pitino added a key victory with an 8-3 win over Pines Charter. Cicero and Bai teamed to win districts at No.1 doubles.
For Archbishop McCarthy, McLean is a district champion at No.1 girls’ singles, while teammates Mariana Rueda (No.2) and Alana Fleitas (No.3) were district runners-up. Plus, Milena Arteta and Isabella Rojas were district runners-up at No.2 doubles.
Pembroke Pines Charter twin sophomores Nicolas and Felipe Murillo won districts at No.1 boys’ doubles to qualify for state.
DISTRICT 16-4A
Palmetto easily won district team titles in boys’ and girls’ divisions.

District lacrosse
The Belen Jesuit boys’ lacrosse team captured its sixth consecutive district championship with a 17-4 victory over NSU University School of Davie.
Matias Cabanas led the offense with an outstanding performance, tallying 4 goals and 3 assists. Jaime Torres and Lorenzo Magarino each contributed 3 goals and 2 assists, while Adrian Navarro added 2 goals. Marcelo Olivella, Andres Lopez-Gottardi, Michael Gonzalez, Jack Consuegra, and Max Erdmann also scored.
In goal, Adrian Bertorelli once again delivered a stellar performance for the Wolverines, recording 15 saves. At the faceoff X, Jack Guitian and Ben Portela controlled possession to set the tone throughout the game.
With the win, Belen (18-2) advances to regionals.
More district lacrosse
Westminster Christian won its second consecutive district title by beating Ransom Everglades 7-4 in the finals.
Andres Rodriguez, a junior, led with 2 goals, 2 assists and 5 ground balls for the Warriors (13-3. including an 11-game win streak). He moved into second in the district in total points (38 goals and 25 assists for 63 points).
Against Ransom during the regular season, Rodriguez scored the final three goals, including the winner with 17 seconds to play in an 8-7 win. A team leader, he’s been playing for Westminster Christian since 8th grade, and he’s a member of the True Florida club team.
Also for the Warriors in the district finals, Jake Austin and Will Haller each recorded 1 goal and 2 assists. Andres Gonzalez added 1 goal and 1 assist, and Anthony Gonzalez totaled 9 ground balls. Austin De Moya and Maddox Gillen scored, too.
District baseball
For the first time in the almost 70-year history of Southwest High School, the Eagles baseball team won the district championships for the third consecutive season.
Southwest (16-7) scored in every inning en route to an 11-4 victory over South Dade to capture the District 16-7A title. Freshman Marcos Veliz pitched the first four innings to earn the win, while senior Tyler Villamor hurled the last three for the save.
Jorge Lacher was 2-for-4 with three RBI, and Dylan Duarte and Max Rico also had two hits each. Bryan Garcia delivered a 2-run double.
