The American Heritage-Plantation boys’ volleyball team is on an historic run.
With a 3-0 sweep (25-23, 25-19, 25-22) of St. John Paul II-Boca Raton, the Patriots extended their winning streak to a program-best seven consecutive matches -- all without dropping a set -- while improving to 11-3.
That propelled the Patriots into the FHSAA Class 2A Top 25 (24th) for the first time in school history.
Individual milestones are also piling up: senior setter Sean Kanji surpassed 500 career assists. Senior middle Dylan De Schryver eclipsed 100 kills on the season with a hitting percentage of .421, and Coach German Garcia celebrated his 100th career victory at American Heritage-Plantation (combined boys and girls).
At the Highlands Christian Tournament, Somerset Academy-Boynton Beach ended the set and match win streaks, edging the Patriots 26-24, 21-25, 15-10. American Heritage bounced back at the tournament to defeat Doctor’s Charter 25-17, 25-18 and Boca Raton Christian 25-20, 25-19 in straight sets to start a new streak.
The victory over Doctor’s Charter set a program mark for most wins in a season at 12. Beating Boca Raton Christian extended the new mark at 13-4.
More boys’ volleyball
The Belen Jesuit boys’ volleyball team traveled to Chicago for some Illinois competition.
The Wolverines (17-6) were hosted by Loyola Academy in Wilmette, Illinois and St. Laurence in Burbank, Illinois.
Belen went 2-1.
Belen beat St. Ignatius Prep 2-0 (25-22, 25-17).
Belen lost to Loyola Academy 0-2 (22-25, 21-25).
Belen edged St. Laurence 2-1 (18-25, 25-23, 25-17).

Region water polo
Cooper City and Gulliver Prep girls and Ransom Everglades boys advanced in the region playoffs, including exciting overtime semifinal wins for Ransom and Columbus.
GIRLS: Region 3 Quarterfinals: Cooper City 20, Cypress Bay 12: Led by Skylar Flowers (11 goals), Christina Buryk (6 goals) and Saree Young (1 goal), the Cowboys (15-8) advance to the region semifinals where they play Pembroke Pines Charter, a 26-7 winner over South Broward. The winner plays the winner of St. Thomas Aquinas vs. Miami Country Day for the region title. Tania Mantilla had 6 goals for Cypress Bay (7-10).
GIRLS: Region 4 Quarterfinals: Gulliver Prep 11, Flanagan 0: Sophomore Sofia Beltran recorded a shutout in goal with 3 saves and 1 steal for the Raiders (18-3). Junior Elena Bueter had 2 goals and 3 steals. Sophomore Emma Herce-Gonzalez had 2 goals and 2 assists.

GIRLS: Region 4 Semifinals: Gulliver Prep 18, Miami Beach 0: Led by senior captain Sophia Kingston with 7 goals, 3 assists and 1 steal. the Raiders improved to 19-3. Sophomore Emma Preston had 4 goals, 1 assist and 1 steal, and sophomore Sofia Beltran had 8 blocks, 1 assist and 1 steal. In the region finals, Gulliver faces Ransom Everglades, a 12-7 winner over MAST.
BOYS: Region 4 Quarterfinals: Gulliver Prep 11, Mater Lakes Academy 9: Senior Captain Juan Sebastian Ibarra totaled 14 saves and made 2 steals for the Raiders (15-10). Leading all scorers was junior Landon Eskra with 4 goals and 1 steal. Senior Matthew Preston added 3 goals, 2 assists and 1 steal.

BOYS: Region 4 Semifinals: Ransom Everglades 14, Gulliver Prep 13 (OT): Oliver Friedland had 4 goals for Ransom Everglades (26-2), and Aston Gould scored the winner. Columbus beat Belen Jesuit 22-21 also in overtime to set-up a showdown between Ransom Everglades and Columbus (20-7) for the region title. Daniel Forero-Onofre and Francisco Vazquez each had 6 goals for the Explorers, with Vazquez scoring the winner.
District baseball
District 16-7A Semifinal: Southwest 6, Coral Reef 0: Winning pitcher Euclides Alvarez tossed a complete game 3-hit shutout to lead the Eagles (15-7) at South Dade High School. All three Coral Reef hits were infield hits, while Alvarez struck out 10 and walking none. Orisjoe Valdes was 3-for-4 to lead the Southwest offense. For the district title, the Eagles will face South Dade, a 3-1 winner over Palmetto.
