A True North baseball comeback ends in a walk-off win over Doral. Plus state hoops awards

The True North Classical Academy baseball team came-from-behind to defeat Doral Academy 6-5 in walk-off fashion.

Tied at five in the bottom of the seventh, Evan Alexander’s RBI single drove in Jayden Cedeno with the game-ending, winning run.

Trailing 1-0, Doral scored five runs in the top of the fifth. The Titans rallied, scoring two in the fifth and two more in the sixth. Danilo Bossano tied the game on a single, scoring Robbie Harris to cap off the effort.

Mikey Cuenca’s RBI single gave True North a 1-0 lead in the fourth.

True North starter Carlos Victorero allowed one run on one hit, while walking four and striking out four in four innings. Doral starter Andy Espinoza gave up three runs (two earned) on four hits and four walks, while striking out three in five innings. Alex Diaz recorded the win in relief.

Cedeno and Cuenca each collected two hits. Noel Ferro, Bossano, Cuenca and Alexander each drove in one run. Cedeno walked twice and stole two bases.

True North then improved to 13-7 with a 7-2 win over Braddock, and Doral Academy bounced back with a 14-4 win over Westminster Christian and 9-7 victory over Belen Jesuit.

State basketball awards

Serenity Hardy from Winter Haven High School is the 2026 Florida Dairy Farmers Miss Basketball following a final round of voting by a statewide panel of high school coaches and media representatives.

The senior guard led her team to a 14-6 record by averaging 23.9 points, 4.7 rebounds, 2.8 steals and 1.1 assists per game before suffering a season-ending Achilles tendon injury during a Jan. 27th game against Tampa Catholic.

As a junior, Hardy averaged 19.2 points per game in leading Winter Haven to the Class 7A state title. She has signed to play college basketball at the University of South Florida, Winter Haven is the first school to produce three Miss Basketball winners as Hardy joins previous honorees LaQwesha Gamble (2005) and Tiffany Hayes (2008).

Hardy, who earlier was named the Class 7A Player of the Year, totaled 95 points in the voting to finish ahead of Class 1A POY Jasleen Green of Grandview Prep (78 points) and Class 6A POY Isabella Sangha of St. Thomas Aquinas (72). Class 3A POY Leiyah Bain of Miami Killian finished fourth (34), followed by Class 4A POY Kathleen Crawley of Bishop Kenny and Class 2A POY Jalynn Belton of Miami Country Day (24), Class 5A POY Ashlynn Day of Gateway (20), and Rural Class POY Sa’Nyree Myers of Moore Haven (5).

Jade Brown of Booker T. Washington High School-Pensacola is the 2026 Florida Dairy Farmers Girls’ Basketball Coach of the Year following a final round of voting by a statewide panel of high school coaches and media representatives.

Brown led her squad to a 24-3 record and the Class 5A state title. In 14 years at Washington, Brown has posted a 214-110 record, including a 68-11 mark over the past three seasons.

Brown, who was earlier named the Class 5A Coach-of-the-Year, totaled 89 points to finish ahead of Class 7A COY Daniela Barrios of Doral Academy with 59 points and Class 2A COY Ochiel Swaby of Miami Country Day (53). Class 4A COY Anthony McCutcheon of Somerset Academy finished fourth with 49 points, followed by Rural Class COY Willie Powers of Williston (46), 4A COY Will Mayer of Bishop Kenny and Class 6A COY Emily Williams of St. Thomas Aquinas (22) and Class 1A COY Jeff Price of Grandview Prep (12).

The Florida Dairy Farmers High School Sports Awards program exemplifies Florida Dairy Farmers’ commitment to the state’s youth. This is the 34th year of these unique awards as we honor the state’s top athletes and coaches in FHSAA sanctioned and recognized sports. The program also emphasizes to young people the importance of keeping dairy products a primary part of their diet in their overall nutrition plan.
