Doral Academy, Southwest win baseball events. Plus Belen lacrosse, state hoops honors, more

The Doral Academy baseball team went 3-0 to win the Prospect Select Spring Break Classic in Viera.

Doral Academy opened with a 16-5 victory over Archbishop McCarthy. The Firebirds (18-2) then beat Melbourne 7-3 to reach the finals where they defeated Lake Butler Union County 14-3.

More baseball

The Southwest baseball team won the HSBN Spring Break Tournament in South Florida.

The Eagles (10-6) defeated Killian 8-4 in the semifinals and then edged Miami Christian 10-9 in eight innings in walk-off fashion for the championship.

Alejandro Porta drove in the winner against Miami Christian, after Brandon Piedra’s sacrifice bunt put the winning run, Max Rico, in scoring position. Rico walked to start the rally.

Southwest jumped ahead with four runs in the bottom of the second. Miami Christian plated three in the fourth, but the Eagles countered with three in the bottom of the inning for a 7-3 advantage. Miami Christian went ahead with three in the fifth and two more in the sixth. Trailing 8-7, Southwest regained the lead with two in the sixth. Miami Christian evened things with one in the seventh to force extra play.

In the semifinal, Southwest scored four times in the bottom of the second inning. Killian chipped away at the lead, eventually tying it at 4 in the sixth. The Eagles responded scoring four times in the bottom of the inning with Jorge Lacher driving in the go-ahead/winning run.

Lacrosse

The Belen Jesuit boys’ lacrosse team traveled to Tampa for a three-game tournament, which included a battle against their Jesuit counterparts from across the state, and the Wolverines came home still undefeated.

In their opening match, the Wolverines faced Fordham Prep from Bronx, New York. Belen jumped out to a 4-1 lead, but Fordham battled back to make it close. The Wolverines held on for a 6-5 victory. Jaime Torres led the way with 3 goals and 1 assist. Jack Consuegra added 2 goals, and Lorenzo Magarino contributed 1.

Game two saw Belen against Rockhurst Jesuit from Kansas City, Missouri. Once again the Wolverines started strong and never let up, cruising to a 12-4 win. Consuegra had a huge performance with 5 goals and 2 assists. Matias Cabanas, Torres and Magarino each scored 2 goals, while Adrian Navarro added 1. Jack Guitian dominated at the faceoff X.

In the final game, Belen squared off against in-state rival Tampa Jesuit. The Wolverines built an 8-1 halftime lead. The Tigers mounted a comeback to close the gap to two, but Belen sealed the win late, 9-6. Torres scored 3 goals, Luke Collings added 2 goals, and Jorge Olivella, Adriano Vizoso, Magarino, and Guitian each found the net. Adrian Bertorelli anchored the defense with 14 saves in goal as the Wolverines improved to 14-0.

Belen is continuing its successful season, traveling to Vero Beach to face St. Edward’s and Vero Beach high schools, and they came away with two hard-fought victories.

The Wolverines took on a traditionally strong St. Edward’s and secured a 14-11 win. Jack Consuegra led the offensive charge with 5 goals and 3 assists, while Adrian Navarro added 3 goals and 3 assists. Adriano Vizoso and Jaime Torres each contributed 2 goals, and Matias Cabanas and Lorenzo Magarino each added 1 goal. In goal, Adrian Bertorelli recorded 14 saves, anchoring the defense, while Jack Guitian dominated at the faceoff X, winning 15 of 19 draws.

Belen returned to action the next day against Vero Beach. The Wolverines jumped out to a 5-1 lead in the first quarter. However, Vero Beach battled back to tie the game at six by halftime. After regrouping, the Wolverines pulled ahead in the third quarter, taking a 10–7 lead and ultimately winning 11-9.

Magarino and Consuegra each scored 3 goals, while Vizoso had 2 goals. Max Erdmann, Navarro and Torres each contributed a goal. Bertorelli recorded 11 saves in net, and Guitian, along with Ben Portela, controlled the faceoffs.

In between the Tampa and Vero Beach trips, Belen (16-1) suffered its first defeat of the season, a 9-6 setback to Boca Raton St. John Paul II.

State basketball honors

The eight individual class finalists for the 2026 Florida Dairy Farmers Miss Basketball and Girls’ Basketball Coach of the Year were announced after voting by a statewide panel of high school girls’ basketball coaches and prep media members.

Every finalist was the leading vote-getter in their classification, making each one the Player of the Year or Coach of the Year in their respective class.

The two overall winners will be announced following a final round of balloting by coaches and media.

The eight finalists for the 2026 Miss Basketball Award include three class winners from the area:

Isabella Sangha, St. Thomas Aquinas, Senior, Forward, Class 6A Player of the Year: she led her team to a 22-8 record and the Class 6A state title by averaging 15.4 points, 11.3 rebounds, 2.4 blocks, 1.7 assists and 2.1 steals per game. She has signed with the University of Notre Dame to play basketball and volleyball.

Leiyah Bain, Miami Killian, Senior, Guard, Class 3A Player of the Year: she led her team to a 12-3 record by averaging 35.6 points, 6.9 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 4.2 steals per game.

Jalynn Belton, Miami Country Day, Junior, Guard/Forward, Class 2A Player of the Year: she led her team to a 28-2 record and the Class 2A state title by averaging 13.1 points, 4.3 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 2.9 steals per game.

The eight finalists for the 2026 Girls’ Basketball Coach of the Year include three class winners from the area:

Daniela Barrios, Doral Academy, Class 7A Coach of the Year: in her first year as head coach, the Doral alumna led her team to a 28-2 record and the Class 7A state title, the first state championship in school history.

Emily Williams, St. Thomas Aquinas, Class 6A Coach of the Year: in her first year as head coach at Aquinas, she led her team to a 22-8 record and the Class 6A title.

Ochiel Swaby, Miami Country Day, Class 2A Coach of the Year: he led his squad to a 28-2 record and a fourth straight state title. In 22 years at MCD, Swaby has compiled a 494-143 record with 11 state championships.

Other locals who placed in classification voting: 7A: 2. Stephanie Vega, Doral Academy; 3. Sakura Barnes South Dade. 5A: 3. Coach James Green, Blanche Ely. 4A: 3. Vanessa Vancott, Mater Lakes Academy; 3. Coach Greg Farias, American Heritage-Plantation.

Boys’ volleyball

The Belen Jesuit boys’ volleyball team went 4-1 to win the Silver Bracket at the Orlando Classic Tournament, hosted by Freedom High School.

The Wolverines (14-5) beat to Winter Springs 26-24, 25-17 and Spruce Creek 25-13, 25-15, 15-10. Then they lost to Freedom 27-25, 25-22. Belen rebounded to beat Gulf Breeze 14-25, 25-23, 15-12. In the Silver Bracket final, the Wolverines beat Horizon 25-20, 25-17.

Billy Essig led the way again with 48 kills, 21 digs and 5 aces. Jeremy Garcia had 25 kills, 6 blocks and 11 digs, and Justin Garcia added 23 kills and 15 digs. Miguel Martinez totaled 12 kills and 4 blocks, and Nicholas Barales had 53 digs, 7 aces and 73 serve receptions.

Prior, Belen came from behind to defeat host Bishop Moore 23-25, 25-22, 25-18, 25-17 in Orlando in a non-tournament match.

After the match, Bishop Moore shared dinner with Belen in a great community event for both programs.

BOYS: Ransom Everglades Invitational: Gulliver Prep 11, Boca Ratron St. Andrew’s 6: Sr. Captain Juan Sebastian Ibarra led the Raiders in goal with 14 saves. Sr Matthew Preston had 3 goals, 3 assists and 4 steals. Jr. Landon Eskra had 2 goals and 4 steals. GP 13-9.
