Gulliver third at Forza Stefano Water Polo. Vancott reaches milestones. Plus more sports

Gulliver Prep competed in the 10th annual Forza Stefano Water Polo Tournament at the Pembroke Pines Charter School Pool.

The three-day tourney is an annual event honoring Stefano Dioguardi, a former Pembroke Pines Charter water polo captain, who passed away from Ewing’s Sarcoma. This event raises funds and awareness for teenage cancer research and support while featuring high school boys’ and girls’ teams from Central and South Florida.

The Raiders girls’ team placed third.

GIRLS: Gulliver Prep 18, Miami Country Day 9: Sr Captain Sophia Kingston 7 goals, 7 steals, 3 draw exclusions; Sr Elizabeth Sheehan 4 goals, 3 assists; Soph Emma Preston 3 goals, 4 steals. GP 7-2.

BOYS: Gulliver Prep 15, Northeast 8: Soph Jesse Manno 5 goals, 2 steals; Sr Captain Sebastian Piedra 2 goals, 3 assists, 2 steals; Sr Captain Goalkeeper Juan Sebastian Ibarra 7 saves, 1 assist, 2 steals. GP 7-6.

BOYS: Gulliver Prep 19, Pembroke Pines Charter 7: Sr Captain Sebastian Piedra 9 assists, 4 steals, 4 goals; Sr Jonas Schoenwald 4 goals, 1 steal; Soph Jesse Manno 5 goals, 2 assists, 2 steals. GP 4-5.

Track & field

The Belen Jesuit boys’ track & field won the Bulldog Classic hosted by the Bolles School in Jacksonville.

The Wolverines were led by the amazing performances of juniors Marcelo Mantecon and Armando Cruz. Both competed in three individual events and one relay.

Mantecon was first in the 1,600-meter run (4:12.13), 800 meters (1:51.75) and 3,200 meters (8:58.19) and was the anchor of the winning 3,200-meter relay squad (8:00.19). Cruz was second in the 1,600 (4:14.74), fourth in the 800 (1:53.79) and sixth in the 3,200 (9:12.83). He was also on the winning 3,200-meter relay unit.

Also making a major contribution was sophomore Jack Michalak who was second in the 800 (1:53.52) and fourth in the 1,600 (4:19.32), while also running on the winning 3,200-meter relay team.

Basketball

Mater Lakes Academy junior Vanessa Vancott reached the 2,000-point career mark along with 500-plus rebounds.

Vancott surpassed the 2,000-point career mark by scoring 27 points in a Region 4-4A girls’ semifinal loss against Northwestern 59-54. That gave her 2,012 points with her senior season remaining.

Vancott surpassed the 500-rebound mark in a 66-52 win over LaSalle in January. She finished the season reaching 550 rebounds.

Baseball

Palmetto 3, Coral Park 0: The Panthers (6-4) scored three in the top of the first, and that was all that was needed as winning pitcher Fernando Gutierrez (1-0) and Jose Uzcategui combined on a no-hitter. Uzcategui also went 2-for-3 with two RBI, and Sebastian Martinez and Lorenzo Pedrosa each scored a run.

Southwest 8, Westminster Christian 5: Orisjoe Valdes, Max Rico, Eduan Negrin and Jorge Lacher hit home runs to ignite a come-from-behind win over the Warriors (6-4). Winning pitcher Euclides Alvarez tossed 6 solid innings for the Eagles (5-5).

Softball
