Wrestlers Gallo, Gonzalez make history. Moccos, Nazario, Sainz, Soto undefeated. Plus more sports
Abigail Gonzalez of Miami Southridge fared well at the FHSAA Class 3A State Wrestling Championships in Kissimmee.
The sophomore medaled, which is outstanding, but she did it in the boys’ state tournament, which is history making.
Gonzalez already made a mark by becoming the first female wrestler to qualify for state in the boys’ competition during the sanctioned era. She qualified for state by placing fourth at the Region 4-3A tournament at 113 pounds at South Dade HS in Homestead.
At boys’ state at Silver Spurs Arena, Gonzalez went 2-3 to finish eighth, earning a spot on the podium.
She opened the event by beating Russell Yarbough of Plant City by pin at 5:55. She then lost by just two points to Chris Schnobrick of Boca Raton Olympic Heights 6-4. Next she beat Rhett Durden of St. John’s Bartram Trail 10-4. She lost to Vincent Nikollaj of Hagerty 14-4 and then Monarch’s Tyler Metellus by medical forfeit.
Gonzalez is ranked No.1 in the nation in girls’ 115. A member of Team Florida, she also competes for the Miami Wrestling Club
While Gonzalez was taking her spot on the boys’ medal stand, the Mocco brothers of Cardinal Gibbons took their familiar spot there, too.
Peter, a sophomore, went 4-0 (three by pin and one by technical fall) at state in Class 1A to complete an undefeated season at 55-0, while winning his second state title. Prior, he placed first as an 8th grader for Coral Springs Charter and second as a freshman for Cardinal Gibbons.
Michael, a senior, also went 4-0 (two by pin and two by technical fall) at state to also record an undefeated season at 54-0, while winning his fourth consecutive state title. As an 8th grader at Coral Springs Charter, he was third. His career mark 244-6.
The Moccos helped the Chiefs finish fourth at state in Class 1A.
Michael, a national and international medal winner in Freestyle and Greco-Roman, will be wrestling for NCAA Division I University of Iowa on scholarship.
The Mocco brothers weren’t the only undefeated state champs from the area.
Mater Lakes Academy won the state team title in Class 1A for the second consecutive season. The Bears had a state champ who went undefeated, too. Senior Kalias Nazario was 25-0 at 165 pounds, capped off with his second consecutive state title, while helping the Bears repeat. Nazario will wrestle for NCAA Division I Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville.
In Class 2A, senior Tristan Sainz of runner-up Somerset Academy Pembroke Pines won state at 157 pounds to complete an undefeated season at 34-0. He is a repeat state champ and a two-time state runner-up with a 150-15 career mark. He is also ranked in the Top 25 in the world in jiu-jitsu.
Lazaro Soto, a junior from Southwest Miami, won a Class 3A state title at 120 pounds with an area best 60-0 record this season. A two-time state champ, he helped the Eagles place fourth at state.
Five of the Top 10 teams in Class 3A at state were from Miami.

Florida Christian School coach Alan Alvarez was very pleased with his team’s effort at the girls’ state tournament.
With only four girls, the Patriots placed third overall, second best of South Florida teams.
Florida Christian School seventh grader Melissa Gallo (30-2) highlighted the effort by becoming the first middle schooler in Florida to win a high school state title in the girls’ competition. A 115-pounder, she is also the first Patriots wrestler to do so (boy or girl).
NOTE: Coach Alvarez will be leaving with Florida Christian School freshman Zoe Delgado (3rd at state at 140 at 28-3) and Florida Christian School alum / Huntingdon College sophomore wrestler Chloe Parets (2023 Miami Herald All-Dade first team) as they will be part of a Team USA all-star wrestling squad that will compete at the Windsor Open in London, England.
