Mater Lakes, Somerset, South Dade win at region wrestling. Girl qualifies for boys’ state. Plus more sports
After finishing a surprising third at districts in 16-3A, the historically strong South Dade boys’ wrestling team bounced back to win the FHSAA Region 4-3A title at its gym in Homestead.
Coined “The Region of Doom,” the Buccaneers finished ahead of District 16-3A champ Southwest and District 16-3A runner-up Southridge. That makes 22 region titles for South Dade, first under head coach Humberto Reyna Jr., who replaced the legendary Victor Balmeceda, who stepped down after last season.
Southwest was the region runner-up and Southridge third. South Plantation, a district champ in 14-3A, was the top Broward placer, taking sixth.
While South Dade was continuing to build on its legacy, Abigail Gonzalez of Miami Southridge was making her own mark by becoming the first female wrestler to qualify for state in the boys’ competition in the sanctioned era. A sophomore, she placed fourth at region at 113 pounds. She is ranked No.1 in the nation in girls’ 115. A member of Team Florida, she also competes for the Miami Wrestling Club.
Somerset Academy Pembroke Pines won its fifth FHSAA IBT region title (fourth consecutive), finishing first in Region 4-2A at Felix Varela HS in Miami. The Panthers qualified 11 wrestlers for state. Jensen Beach took runner-up honors, and Mater Acadremy Charter was third. Archbishop McCarthy was fourth, just four points behind Mater.
Mater Lakes Academy captured its second consecutive FHSAA IBT region title, placing first in Region 4-1A at Cardinal Gibbons HS in Fort Lauderdale. The host Chiefs secured runner-up honors. The Mocco brothers (Peter at 215 and Michael at 285) from Cardinal Gibbons are combined 101-0, entering state.
