Edison beats Palmetto in flag football. Plus Cooper City and Gulliver water polo and more sports
Miami Edison, No.1 in the state in Class 1A in girls’ flag football, defeated Miami Palmetto, No.5 in the state in Class 4A.
In a defensive battle, the Red Raiders won 12-0. Mikeria Miller scored with a pick-six on a 15-yard interception return in the first quarter.
Ahead 6-0, Torri Cottman added an insurance touchdown in the third quarter on a 5-yard slant pass from Rykia Louis.
Louis threw for 180 yards with one touchdown. Cottman had nine catches for 86 yards and a touchdown. Brianna Bogans made six catches for 42 yards. Jennifer Burton, Tiger Lilly and Talayah Akhdar led a stellar defense en route to the shutout.
Water polo
Cooper City and Gulliver Prep will be competing in the 10th annual Forza Stefano Water Polo Tournament from Thursday-Saturday at the Pembroke Pines Charter School Pool.
The tourney is an annual event honoring Stefano Dioguardi, a former Pembroke Pines Charter water polo captain, who passed away from Ewing’s Sarcoma. This event raises funds and awareness for teenage cancer research and support while featuring high school boys’ and girls’ teams from Central and South Florida.
Gulliver Prep recently competed in the Orlando Supra Water Polo Tournament.
