Lydia Berent has been at the heart of gradual build-up of success on the Cardinal Gibbons softball team.

With Berent in the pitching circle, Gibbons has put together three consecutive winning seasons, improving each year. They went 22-6 last season and made it to the regional semifinals for the second consecutive season.

In the meantime, Berent has become one of the top pitchers in the nation, earning the opportunity to sign with softball powerhouse Stanford University - a rarity for South Florida softball players.

But Berent has unfinished business before she heads to the west coast.

Berent is hoping this is the season, the Chiefs put it all together and bring home the school’s first state championship in the sport.

Berent was dominant last season, going 20-6 with a 1.11 ERA, 243 strikeouts. At the plate, she showed her versatility as well, hitting .500 with three home runs, 11 doubles and scoring 39 runs.

And after starting out as a star on a rebuilding program three years ago, Berent may have the most talented roster she’s ever had around her heading into this season.

It starts with her battery mate, sophomore catcher Skylar Flack, a first team All-Broward selection last season who hit .387. Flack will share the catching responsibilities with senior Sara Wzrosek, a transfer from St. Thomas Aquinas.

Junior infielder Morgan Beavers, a first team All-Broward selection, leads the Chiefs’ lineup after hitting .403 a year ago. A pair of versatile freshmen, Kennadi Wilson and Gia Schirripa, a transfer from Coral Springs Charter, will boost the infield.

Gibbons’ potential road in Class 3A continues to be daunting, however.

The Chiefs hope to finally break through the two-pronged barrier of Miami Somerset Silver Palms and Coral Springs Charter, who have dueled for the right to go to state in that class for each of the past four seasons.

OVERCOMING HEARTBREAK

American Heritage is coming off a crushing 7-6 loss to Fort Walton Beach in the Class 4A state championship game last season. The good news for the Patriots, who went 23-3 last year, is their young squad is back pretty much entirely.

Freshman Lyric Rodriguez leads that group a year after emerging as one of the state’s top pitchers. Backing her up will be sophomore outfielder Adri Layne, junior catcher Samantha Santana, senior infielders Bria Villano and Emma Griffith and sophomore infielder Mia West. Heritage is seeking its first state title since 2018 and ninth overall.

MORE OUTLOOKS

Coral Springs Charter (23-4, 3A regional finalist) has failed to overcome Somerset Silver Palms for three consecutive seasons and therefore come up short of the state final four. Expect the Panthers to likely earn themselves another opportunity in a loaded region.

Impressive junior ace Courtney Wahlbrink returns to lead Coral Springs Charter in the circle, and will be relied upon even more this season to shoulder that responsibility. Senior infielder Gio Gurgel and junior infielder Cameron Thiele return to lead the Panthers at the plate, along with sophomore infielders Addi Brown and Bree Martinelli, and freshman infielder/pitcher Jazzy Chung.

Western (20-6-1, 7A state semifinalist) has reloaded for a potential bid for a third consecutive trip to the state final four and second state title in three seasons. The Wildcats graduated mainstay pitcher Ali Solo, but replaced that vacancy with ex-West Broward ace Cheyanne Chaffin. Western still has plenty of bats to back up Chaffin including senior infielder Analie Diaz, senior outfielders Hanna Turner and Madison Mejia and sophomore infielder Katarina Kuma. Senior outfielder Izzy Baron, a transfer from Archbishop McCarthy, is another huge addition.

St. Thomas Aquinas (16-13, 5A state semifinalist) is now under the direction of former longtime Cypress Bay coach Lonny Shapiro, who took over for longtime Raiders coach Bryan Baucom. Shapiro is dealing with a lot of roster turnover with only one starting position player and two pitchers returning. Those are senior outfielder Brianna Sims, senior pitcher Taylor Good and sophomore pitcher Lavinia Miller. The Raiders will lean on that trio’s experience early on.

West Broward (18-8, 7A regional finalist) is coming off a heartbreaking loss in last year’s regional final. This offseason, the Bobcats lost their top pitcher Cheyanne Chaffin when she transferred to Western. But West Broward is still strong enough to contend, led by junior infielder Victoria Carmona and junior outfielder Jayla Castillo.

Pembroke Pines Charter (12-15, 5A regional semifinalist) returns one of the county’s top pitchers in junior Destiney Ortega, and she’ll lead a Jaguars squad still very young. Sophomore middle infielder Sofia Rodriguez and sophomore catcher/first baseman Isabella Pascual are two, who will lead in the infield.

Stoneman Douglas (12-12, 7A regional quarterfinalist) is looking for a return to the postseason, led by senior catcher Maya Boleen. Junior shortstop Camryn Ferro and sophomore third baseman Dani Rincon add depth to the Eagles’ lineup, and junior Kaitlin Enright leads Douglas in the pitching circle.

Cooper City (5-19, 6A regional quarterfinalist) expects improvement thanks to an experienced lineup led by junior third baseman Jordyn Samson, who had her season cut short after eight games last year due to injury. A trio of sophomores in Marina Recht, Lola Pedicelli and Aileen Laffita anchor the Cowboys’ lineup along with junior Rylee Hedden.

Chaminade (9-12) is rebuilding under new coach Emily Winburn and with a young group led by senior utility player Isabel Blanco. Junior Paige Boccuzzi, a transfer from St. Thomas Aquinas, should bring versatility to the Lions’ lineup.

Pine Crest (3-9) will be led by sophomore Gabby Luong, and freshmen Oceanna Baker and Lia Li.
