True North baseball rallies. Plus Archbishop McCarthy lacrosse, NSU U basketball and more

Trailing 2-1 in the top of seventh, the visiting True North baseball team rallied with five runs en route to a 6-2 victory over Southridge.

Southridge scored first in the second inning as Chris Gonzalez doubled, driving in one run. The Spartans built a 2-1 lead in a good pitching battle.

In the top of the seventh, the Titans plated five runs on four hits. The biggest blow in the inning was a 2-run single by Jayden Cedeno.

True North senior pitcher Carlos Victorero earned the win in relief, allowing one run (zero earned) on one hit over three innings, while striking out four and walking two. Matias Fischer tossed one inning of scoreless ball for the save.

William Foss started the game for the Titans, allowing four hits and one run over three innings, while striking out five and walking three.

Issac Vidal was the starting pitcher for Southridge. He allowed six runs (four earned) on six hits over seven innings, while striking out 13 and walking four.

Number seven hitter Danilo Bossano showed the depth of True North’s line-up by leading the team with two hits in three at bats. Cedeno went 1-for-4 with two RBI. Senior Jonathan Paniagua led the Spartans going 3-for-4.

True North improves to 2-0, and Southridge is 2-1.

More baseball

Southwest 16, South Miami 1: Max Rico hit a grand slam to lead the Eagles (1-1) over the Cobras (0-2). Winning pitcher Adrison Rodriguez struck out four and allowed just one hit in three innings. Brandon Piedra was 2-for-2 with 3 RBI, and Eduan Negrin was 2-for-3 with 2 RBI.

Doral Academy 13, Keys Gate 0: Louie Prieto 1-for-1, 3-run HR; Kobe Carrion 1-for-4, HR, 4 RBI; Santiago Ponte 1-for-2, 1 RBI; WP Esteban Delaunez 3 IP, 1 H, 2 K. Dor 3-0.

Basketball postseason

The NSU University School girls’ basketball team is young, very young.

The Sharks are 16-6 with sixth, seventh and eighth graders. It’s a middle school aged team competing against high school varsity competition.

Recently, the young NSU University School team defeated Miami Killian 67-60 in a Region 4-3A quarterfinal. Seventh graders Laly Luque, Lielle Montgomery and Kate Schafenacker along with eighth graders Kenna Cohen-Osceola and Haley Anderson and sixth grader Haley Otero-Lopez led the Sharks. Creating a basketball bond, they also play for the Miami Suns AAU team.

Prior, in a district semifinal, a very good Cardinal Gibbons program edged the top seeded Sharks 48-44. The Chiefs then beat North Miami Beach for the District 13-3A title, advancing to regionals. NSU University received an at-large bid for regionals, facing District 16-3A runner-up Killian.

With the big win over Killian, NSU University will play District 15-3A champ Carrollton in a region semifinal on Friday. The Cyclones are 20-2.

Killian junior Leiyah Bain scored a game-high 41 pts (3-7 3-pointers) with 14 rebounds against NSU University as the Cougars ended their season at 12-3.

Softball

Braddock defeated Miami Beach 17-5 in five innings. The winning pitcher was Emely Ramirez. Leading the offense was Emily Cancio who batted 2-for-2 with four runs. Anelis Goberna added a double with three runs for the Bulldogs (2-0).
