The Florida Christian School girls’ wrestling team was second of 22 teams at the inaugural Annie Oakley Showdown at Osceola High School in Kissimmee.

Viera (No.3 in the state) scored 239.5 with 18 wrestlers. FCS (No.4 in the state) scored 163 points with nine wrestlers. Third place Hernando (last year’s No.3 in the state) scored 126.

Gallo is on a 9-match win streak with 8 pins and 1 tech. The tech win was at the Annie Oakley Showdown against three-time state placer Catalina Kenney. In the highly anticipated matchup, Gallo, a 7th grader, easily defeated the senior captain, ranked fourth in the state, 20-3.

More wrestling

The Columbus boys’ wrestling team won the 11th Annual Tri-County Championships at Olympic Heights in Boca Raton.

Sophomore Tomas Campian (36-3) was first at 157 for the champion Explorers.

South Plantation was the runner-up. Senior Lincoln Derby (24-3) was first at 120 for the Paladins. Sophomore Jovanni Tovar (20-1) finished first at 126 for third place Miami Southridge, and junior teammate Alfredo Cheang (21-3) won at 132.

The undefeated Mocco brothers at Cardinal Gibbons continue to dominate, each placing first. Peter, a sophomore, is now 40-0 at 215, and Michael, a senior, is also 40-0 at 285. Deerfield Beach senior Christopher Coleman (44-4) was runner-up at 285.

Water polo

The X Forza Stefano Water Polo Tournament is March 5-7 at the Pembroke Pines Charter Pool.

This fundraising event helps teens (13-17) with cancer and their families, which is the mission of the Forza Stefano Charitable Foundation.

The annual event, in its 10th year, is named in honor of Stefano Dioguardi, a dedicated water polo player and captain of the Pembroke Pines Charter team, who died from Ewing’s Sarcoma.

It is one of Florida’s largest high school water polo tournaments.

Confirmed teams: St. Thomas Aquinas, Gulliver Prep, Miami Country Day, MAST Academy, Boca Raton, St. Andrew’s, Seminole, Copper City, Ramson Everglades, Cypress Bay, Dr. Krop, Lake Mary, Pembroke Pines Charter, Belen Jesuit, Suncoast, Mater Lakes Academy.

Basketball playoffs

North Miami girls and Westwood Christian boys reached respective district finals as postseason basketball is underway.

Rayna Benoit and Lailah Willis led the girls’ team, and Jason Martinez and Daniel Cabello keyed the boys’ team.

The consistently successful Gulliver Prep girls’ tennis team opened the season with a win.
