More basketball

The Westminster Christian girls’ basketball team is looking to repeat as district champion.

The Warriors (13-6) recently beat Archbishop McCarthy, which is ranked above them in local and state rankings. They defeated Lourdes twice this season, a first in recent school history, and they ended the regular season on a 5-game win-streak, 4 of those at home.

Angie Fernandez and Ellie Perez, Westminster Christian’s two leading scorers, are paving the way, performing at a high level throughout the season.

Fernandez took her game to the next level during her junior campaign with top point guard play, learning to distribute the ball at a high level while still scoring each game. She has averaged more than 20 points this season with breakout games against Lourdes (7 assists) and Gulliver Prep (9 assists), both wins. She eclipsed the 1,500-point career mark in a win over Gulliver Prep. She is an absolute force when attacking the basket, and her shooting ability keeps her well-balanced.

Perez is making a huge difference in her freshman season. She is on pace to break the 1,000-point scoring mark in the district championship game, which would make school history as she would be the first Warriors freshman girls’ hoops player to reach that mark. Breakout games include: Bishop Verot (17 pts, 10 rbs, 8 stl, 6 ast) and Key West (30 pts, 11 rbs, 6 stl, 3 ast).
