Lourdes soccer starts strong. Plus hoops, North Broward Prep award winners and more

The Lourdes girls’ soccer team is on a roll with six consecutive victories to open the season.

The Bobcats (6-0) defeated last year’s 4A state runner-up Orlando Bishop Moore 3-0.

Veronica Aguilar had 2 goals and 1 assist, and Alana Garcia-Menocal added a goal. Lorena Alvarez and Gianna Gray provided assists. Goalkeepers Adriana Baena and Sophia McMillian combined on the team’s third shutout.

Prior, Lourdes beat last year’s 3A state champion Somerset Academy Canyons and 5A state semifinalist North Fort Myers. The Bobcats were state runners-up in 5A.

The Belen Jesuit boys’ soccer team won two more games to improve to 7-1-2.

Volleyball honors

The finalists for the Florida Dairy Farmers 2025 Miss Volleyball and Girls’ Volleyball Coach of the Year to recognize the best of the best in the state in high school volleyball include two locals.

They are:

Dasia Johnson of North Broward Prep (Senior, Outside Hitter) - the State Class 4A Player of the Year: Helped her team to a 26-2 record and the Class 4A state title with 326 kills, 222 digs, 40 blocks, 58 aces and a .384 hitting percentage. She has committed to the University of Maryland-Baltimore County (UMBC).

Coach Brian Coughenour of North Broward Prep - the State Class 4A Coach of the Year: In his first year as head coach at NBP, Coughenour led his team to a 26-2 record and the Class 4A state championship, the school’s first state volleyball title.

Other top placing locals in the classification voting: Class 6A: 3. Emmi Merhi of St. Thomas Aquinas; 2. Coach Lisa Zielinski of St. Thomas Aquinas. Class 5A: 2. Julia Lugo of Archbishop McCarthy; 2. Coach Robert Perez of Archbishop McCarthy. Class 3A: Coach Eric Rivera of Pine Crest.

Bowling honors

Carly Rhodes, a junior from Largo High School, and James McGill, a junior from Astronaut High School, are the 2025 Florida Dairy Farmers Miss Bowling and Mr. Bowling after winning individual titles at this year’s state tournament.

In addition, Tom Tagye of East River High School, who led his girls’ team to its third consecutive state title, and Paul Shuler of Seabreeze High School, who led his boys’ squad to its second consecutive state title, repeated as the state’s Girls’ and Boys’ Bowling Coaches of the Year.

The Florida Dairy Farmers High School Sports Awards program exemplifies Florida Dairy Farmers’ commitment to the state’s youth. This is the 34th year of the awards program as we honor the state’s top athletes and coaches in 30 FHSAA sanctioned sports. The program also emphasizes to young people the importance of keeping dairy products a primary part of their diet in their overall nutrition plan.

Basketball

Isaiah Charlot, a junior, shot 10-of-17 from the field including three 3-pointers as the Coral Reef boys’ basketball team defeated Miami Beach 55-47.

He also added six rebounds and four assists to lead the host Barracudas in their opener.

GIRLS: Palmer Trinity 50, Norland 13: Esparza 19 pts (1 3-ptr), 5 asts; Nieves 6 pts, 8 rebs; Laria 11 pts; Wright 7 pts, 9 rebs; Stone 5 pts (1 3-ptr); Rivero 2 pts; Sullivan 4 blks. PT 4-1.
