Poll: Vote for the Miami Herald High School Athlete of the Week (12)
This week, we continue a feature where we ask you to vote for the best high school varsity performer of the week (in Broward and Miami-Dade counties).
This week includes nominees from high school cross-country, football, golf, and swimming.

Jia Amores, Mater Lakes Academy swimming: the sophomore defended her state title in the 100-yard butterfly with a 52.58 and earned her first gold in the 100-yard backstroke with a 55.35. She also anchored the team’s first-place-winning 400-yard freestyle relay at the FHSAA Swimming and Diving Class 2A State Championships at the Florida Aquatics Swimming and Training Center in Ocala. She led the girls’ team to the program’s first state team title.
Chris De Angulo, Belen Jesuit swimming: the senior took first in the 100-yard breaststroke with a 56.14 to help lead the Wolverines’ boys’ team to a runner-up finish at the FHSAA Swimming and Diving Class 2A State Championships at the Florida Aquatics Swimming and Training Center in Ocala.
Diego Eseverri, Columbus cross-country: the senior was second of 117 runners at the FHSAA Boys’ Region 4-4A Championship in 15 minutes 47.9 seconds to lead the Explorers to the boys’ team title.
Amari Germain, Coral Reef football: the sophomore running back had three touchdowns and more than 100 yards as the Barracudas repeated as Greater Miami Athletic Conference champions -- winning it for the third time in the past four seasons -- with a 26-8 win over Hialeah Gardens at Tropical Park.
Bianca Gibbs, Coral Glades golf: the senior was the top Broward/Miami-Dade individual finisher, placing eighth of 96 golfers at 147 (74-73) at the FHSAA Girls’ Golf Class 3A State Championship at Mission Resort & Club in Howey-in-the-Hills.
Daniela Hernandez, Carrollton cross-country: the junior won the FHSAA Girls’ District 8-2A Championship in 19 minutes 31.98 seconds. It marked her second consecutive district title for the champion Cyclones.
David Lazo, South Plantation cross-country: the junior won the FHSAA Boys’ Region 4-4A Championship, besting 116 runners in 3.1 miles at 15 minutes 43.09 seconds at Larry & Penny Thompson Park in Miami.
Nicole Lewis, Doral Academy cross-country: the sophomore won the FHSAA Girls’ Region 4-4A Championship, besting 106 runners in 3.1 miles at 19 minutes 22.23 seconds at Larry & Penny Thompson Park in Miami. She led the Firebirds to their first girls’ cross-country region team title.
Jake Williams, Columbus golf: the sophomore shot 4-over 148 (71-77) to place sixth at the FHSAA Boys’ Golf Class 3A State Championship at Mission Resort & Club in Howey-in-the-Hills. He was the top finisher from Broward and Miami-Dade counties.
Juan Vallmitjana, NSU University School swimming: the junior won gold in the 200-yard freestyle and 500-yard freestyle races at the FHSAA Swimming and Diving Class 1A State Championships at the Florida Aquatics Swimming and Training Center in Ocala.. He swam a 1:37.34 in the 200 and 4:23.80 in the 500, helping the Sharks place eighth in the boys’ team standings with 96 points.
