Carrollton, Doral, Lazo win cross-country titles. Plus soccer, signings and state golf

For the first time in school history, the Doral Academy girls’ cross-country team won the Region 4-4A Championship at Larry & Penny Thompson Park in Miami.

Sophomore Nicole Lewis led the Firebirds by securing the individual title. She ran a winning 19 minutes 22.23 seconds.

Doral placed five runners in the Top 15 to score 32 points, 39 points ahead of runner-up St. Thomas Aquinas.

Senior Gaby Gonzalez Orbegoso (4th, 20:03), junior Lauren Avila (7th, 20:19), 8th grader Estefania Capriles (11th, 20:36) and senior Megan Lewis (13th, 20:39) were outstanding.

Coral Gables was third of 16 teams at 94. The girls’ division featured 107 region qualifiers.

On the boys’ side, Doral placed fourth. Firebirds’ senior Victor Pedreira finished fourth of 117 runners in 16:05.46.

South Plantation junior David Lazo won the region championship in 15:43.09. Senior Diego Eseverri of region champ Columbus was second in 15:47.89.

Columbus finished first of 16 teams to claim that boys’ team title. The Explorers scored 39 points, 39 points ahead of runner-up and host Braddock.

District cross-country

The Carrollton girls’ cross-country team won the District 8-2A Championship for the third consecutive year and fifth time in the past six seasons.

Daniela Hernandez, a junior, won the individual championship for the second consecutive year in 19 minutes 31.98 seconds. Teammate Emma Filippi, another junior, placed third at 20:26.68. Also for Carrollton, 8th grader Paola de la Iglesia was eighth in 21:07.12 and freshman Antonia Beltran ninth in 21:26.03. Gabriela Socarras, a junior, finished 11th at 21:27.71, placing five Cyclones in the Top 11.

The 3.1-mile run was at Larry & Penny Thompson Park in Miami.

State golf

Jake Williams of Columbus shot 4-over 148 (71-77) to finish sixth at the 2025 FHSAA Golf Class 3A State Championship at Mission Resort & Club in Howey-in-the-Hills.

Williams, a sophomore, led after 33 holes, was 4-under at one point, but could not hold the lead. He was the top finisher of Broward and Miami-Dade golfers at state in Class 3A.

Williams helped the Explorers place ninth of 16 teams. Columbus senior Joe Fernandez followed with scores of 84–75 (159), showing great resilience in placing 47th of 97 golfers. Senior Marcelo Gonzalez and junior Eduardo Marin each carded 164, while freshman Sebastian Eterovic matched that score in his state debut as they tied for 67th.

St. Thomas Aquinas was 15th and Miami Palmetto 16th.

In the girls’ division, Doral Academy was ninth of 16 teams. Coral Glades senior Bianca Gibbs was the top Broward/Miami-Dade individual finisher, placing eighth of 96 golfers at 147 (74-73).

Flanagan sophomore Yool Her was 29th at 154 (81-73), and Doral Academy junior Manuela Moreno 35th at 156 (82-74).

Soccer

In a battle of state final four teams from a year ago, the Lourdes Academy girls’ soccer team shut out North Fort Myers 4-0.

BOYS: Archbishop McCarthy 5, Cardinal Gibbons 1: Brody Boerstler scored the lone goal for the Chiefs (1-1-1) with the assist from Samuel Vanderwiel.

BOYS: Belen Jesuit 1, South Broward 0: Dilan DeLeon scored the winner with the assist from Marcelo Koch. Keeper Julian Quijano posted the shutout for the Wolverines (3-1-0).

BOYS: Palm League Semifinal: NSU University School 8, North Broward Prep 0: Valentino Ferris and Martin Segal scored two goals apiece. Raul Leyva, Daniel Ciffoni, Kolton Gay and Sacha Destel each added a goal. Keeper Will Zalkin recorded his 3rd shutout in 4 games for the Sharks (3-0-1).

BOYS: Palm League Quarterfinal: NSU University School 1, Ransom Everglades 0: Valentino Ferris scored the winner off an assist from Isa Khaderi. Keeper Will Zalkin recorded his 2nd shutout.

College signings

Cardinal Gibbons High School in Fort Lauderdale announced some college signings.
