Ferguson, South Plantation, Springs Charter among top finishers at state bowling

South Plantation and Coral Springs Charter’s girls’ and the Ferguson boys’ bowling teams were the top finishers from South Florida at the state bowling championships held last week at the Boardwalk Bowl in Orlando.

South Plantation and Coral Springs Charter each advanced to the second round in the girls’ team bracket. Coral Springs Charter then advanced to the fifth round in the consolation bracket before being eliminated by eventual state runner-up Bell Creek.

South Plantation lost in the second round of the consolation bracket to Melbourne. South Plantation’s Sofia Montefusco advanced to the individual Baker round, but lost in the first round. Parkland Douglas was the only Broward boys’ team to advance to the team championship bracket before falling in the first round.

The Falcons’ boys’ teams qualified in teams in eighth place for the Baker round and finished fifth after four rounds of bakers. Ferguson beat Oviedo Hagerty and South Lake before losing in the third round to Port St. Lucie Somerset Prep. Ferguson then lost in the consolation bracket to eventual state runner-up Titusville Astronaut.

Lexander Perdomo led Ferguson individually by finishing seventh overall while Samuel Garcia finished 15th and Rashawn Viart finished 16th.

Also among Dade boys’ teams, Southwest finished 21st, Belen Jesuit finished 24th and Coral Park finished 26th.

On the girls’ side, Ferguson finished 20th out of 34 teams. Krop finished 30th, Palmetto finished 31st, Hialeah Educational Academy placed 32nd and Coral Gables was 34th.

Freshman Angelie Brito tied for 23rd individually with Krop senior Joselyn Reyes-Clark.

FOOTBALL

The Archbishop Carroll Bulldogs blanked Boca Raton Olympic Heights 55-0 on the road last week.

Dylan Galadza scored three touchdowns to lead the Bulldogs (7-1-1), who were set to close the regular season against True North on Monday at Milander Park in the completion of a suspended game expected to decide the District 15-1A championship.

Galadza, a sophomore, returned two interceptions for touchdowns and ran for another one. Freshman Kendru Pembleton added three rushing touchdowns. Will Secola led all rushers with 130 yards on nine carries and scored a touchdown.

Safety George Diaz led Carroll’s defense with an interception and junior Isaiah Suarez added eight tackles including three for loss.

GOLF

The Pine Crest boys’ golf team captured its fourth consecutive district championship on Tuesday at Plantation Preserve. The Panthers turned in a 3-under-par team score of 285, leading the eight-team field and finishing 11 strokes ahead of second-place Boca Raton St. John Paul II (296).

Seniors Ryan Altschul and Jonathan Weinberg led the effort as Weinberg shot a 66 to win the individual title.

CROSS-COUNTRY

Belen Jesuit’s boys closed out their regular season by winning the Pinecrest Last Chance Invitational at South County Regional Park in Boca Raton.

With the team’s top five runners resting, Belen’s mid-pack athletes scored an impressive 16 points, led by junior Liam Salom, who won the individual title with a personal-best time of 15:58. Junior Davi Bodoh finished second overall with a personal-best time of 16:10.

In the latest rankings, MileSplit had the Wolverines ranked 10th in the nation, while Dyestat listed them at 12th, positioning them well for an at-large bid to the Nike NXN National Championship in Portland.
