Ferguson sweeps GMAC bowling; Carroll, True North football continue to roll
For the past three seasons, Ferguson has consistently remained at the top when it comes to South Florida bowling teams.
A week after sweeping the Youth Fair championships, the Falcons added to that momentum by sweeping the GMAC championships at Bird Bowl. Ferguson’s boys and girls brought home the titles together for the third consecutive season.
The boys swept all four matches, beating TERRA and Braddock in the opening rounds, Coral Gables in the semifinals, and Columbus in the final, all 3-0.
The girls pulled off the same feat, beating South Miami (3-0) and TERRA (3-1) in the opening rounds and then pulling off back-to-back wins over Dr. Krop in the semifinals 3-0 and the final, 3-2.
The district tournaments take place this week around the state and the state tournament is Oct. 28-30 at Boardwalk Bowl in Orlando.
FOOTBALL
The Archbishop Carroll football team remained unbeaten (6-0-1) with a convincing 35-14 victory over Somerset South Homestead.
Will Secola led the Bulldogs on offense with 14 carries for 214 yards and three touchdowns. Marcelo Carrion added 109 yards and one touchdown. Freshman Kendru Pembleton also ran for a touchdown.
The defense was led by linebacker Isaiah Suarez who recorded 15 tackles. Coleman Quesada and Joel Rodriguez each had nine tackles.
Carroll returns to action Friday when it hosts Palmer Trinity at 3:30.
True North continued its impressive season with a 42-0 shutout win over Boynton Beach Somerset Canyons. The Titans were led by junior quarterback and FIU commit Zac Katz, who completed 11 of 14 passes for 149 yards and three touchdowns. Katz also ran for a touchdown.
Junior Cecil Smith finished with 73 yards on eight carries and caught two passes for 40 yards while Kemari Morrison, Kamari Bailey and Malik Penson each caught touchdown passes. Gregory Florence ran for a touchdown as well.
George Harris starred for the Titans on defense with two interceptions he returned for a combined 68 yards. Khalil Thomas returned another interception 97 yards for a touchdown and Ricky Carter had eight tackles and a sack. Duane Johnson had 10 tackles including two for loss and a sack, and Camaul King returned a blocked field goal 96 yards and had five tackles.
True North (5-2) has won five in a row and will next play at Columbus on Friday at 6.
The Miami Touchdown Club has recognized several high school football players from Miami-Dade County for their exceptional leadership on and off the field, awarding them the Operation Scholarship and Player of the Week honor for the first half of the football season.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL
Divine Savior continued its impressive district championship streak last week after sweeping Hialeah Educational Academy 3-0 (25-10, 25-8, 25-8) in the District 14-2A final. This is the 13th season in a row that the Sharks (26-1) have won their district’s championship.Ruth Martinez led Divine Savior with 13 kills, nine aces and three digs. Luiza Bergamaschi had seven kills, four aces and three digs.
Kristina Mendoza had seven kills, two digs and an ace. Fernanda Bergamaschi had 14 assists, five aces and two digs and Victoria Gutierrez totaled 15 assists.
Divine Savior is the top seed in Region 4-2A and opened the playoffs on Tuesday at home against Somerset South Homestead.
GOLF
Columbus earned another impressive victory at Lago Mar Country Club in Plantation, defeating American Heritage and Cardinal Gibbons in a tri match.
Two Explorers recorded their lowest rounds of the year, shooting a combined six under par (-6). Sophomore Jake Williams and Freshman Sebastian Eterovic both fired three-under-par 69 rounds to lead Columbus. Joe Fernandez placed fourth overall with a solid 3-over 75, while Eduardo Marin rounded out the team scoring with a 7-over 79.
Ransom 150, Palmer Trinity 164 (Par 144 at Granada Golf Course): The Raiders prevailed after being led by Pablo Munoz, who won individual medalist honors with a 4-under par 32. Mathew Puntikov shot a 1-under 35 while Anson Dover shot even par 36. Palmer Trinity was led by Kyler Kim, who shot a 3-over 39.
