Belen and Doral cross-country are all elite in Jacksonville. Plus bowling and golf
The Doral Academy boys’ cross-country team had an elite performance in the Elite Division of the New World Fall Spectacular at Cecil Field Golf Course in Jacksonville.
The Firebirds placed 14th of 46 teams -- with 2 runners finishing under 16 minutes and three other runners finishing under 17 minutes.
This race had 53 runners finish under 16 minutes and another 105 runners finish under 17 minutes.
Leading the way for the Firebirds was junior Martin Fernandez, who ran a personal best 15:48 to placed 33rd of 405 runners. Senior Victor Pedreira also broke his previous time with a 15:55 clocking.
The PRs didn’t stop there. Sophomore Rafa D’Agostino (16:46), junior Sebastian Omegna (16:59), 8th grader Joaquin Cogo (16:59), 8th grader Pedro Rodriguez (17:07), junior Jonathan Gil (17:30), freshman Amir Ayoub (17:57), and senior Ale Estevez (17:59) ran their fastest times.
In four years since Coach Raviel Maisonet took over the program, the boys’ team average went from 23:03 to 16:29. That has helped Doral rank 13th in Class 4A and 25th among all teams in Florida.
In the Girls’ Elite race, Doral Academy sophomore Nicole Lewis was 22nd of 348 runners at 18:32. Lourdes was 12th of 40 teams, and St. Thomas Aquinas 16th. Doral was 19th, and Westminster Academy 28th.

More cross-country
The Belen Jesuit boys’ cross-country team was runner-up in the Boys’ Elite Division at that same New World Fall Spectacular in Jacksonville.
Once again the Wolverines were led by junior Marcelo Mantecon, who continued his unbeaten streak this season with another record-shattering performance.
From the opening gun, Mantecon wasted no time taking control of the race. He broke away early and left no hope for the pack. He crossed the line in a blazing 14 minutes 33 seconds, lowering his own Florida 5K record and reaffirming his dominance on the state stage.
With Manetcon taking the headlines, his junior teammate Armando Cruz is quietly having an outstanding season as well. He delivered another strong performance, finishing seventh overall at 15:15, helping power Belen to a second-place team finish, behind IMG Academy.
Belen scored 130 points with a 15:31 team average, improving their previous season best by one second. Columbus was fifth of 46 teams at 280. Braddock placed 15th at 485.
Next stop for the state and nationally ranked Wolverines is Tallahassee. They will line up again at the FSU Pre-State Meet on October 25, ready to chase even faster times and bigger goals.

Golf
After a rough showing at the Miami-Dade Youth Fair Tournament, Gulliver Prep’s Arya Luthra rebounded well with a 1-over 37 to take medalist honors in two matches.
Her 37s were against Lourdes at Palmetto Golf Club and against Westminster Christian at Granada Golf Club.
Luthra, an eighth grader, helped the Raiders edge Westminster Christian by one stroke.

Bowling
The Ferguson bowling program ended the regular season undefeated.
The unbeaten Falcons girls’ team beat Krop to finish 12-0. The undefeated Falcons boys’ team did the same.
High game scores for the Ferguson boys were recorded by sophomore Damien Maldonado (243) and seniors Remy Dou (226), Miguel Brito (213), Rashawn Viart (223) and Jesus Prieto (204). High series overall was recorded by Remy Dou (645). For Krop, Legend Parmer had a high game (186) and the team’s high series (506).
In the girls’ match, Ferguson freshman Angelie Brito had a high game (238) and the high series overall (568). Also high games by senior teammates Emma Jaramillo (165), Isabella Jaramillo (152) and Nathalia Salvat (152). For Krop, Joselyn Reyes-Clark had a high game (190) and the team’s high series (445).
Swimming
Coral Gables swimmer Sofia Abril placed third in the girls’ 200 IM at 2:28.98, and Oscar Kramer, also of Coral Gables, was third in the boys’ 200 free at 1:51.50 during the GMAC Championship at Miami-Dade College’s North Campus pool.
The Cavaliers were fifth of 12 teams in the boys’ standings, and the girls were seventh of 11 teams. The meet was cut short because inclement weather.
Volleyball postseason
