Coral Reef volleyball wins GMAC. Plus bowling, football, swimming and more volleyball

The Coral Reef girls’ volleyball team defeated Coral Gables in a thriller to win the GMAC title for the first time since 2017.

The Barracudas edged Coral Gables 25-17, 22-25, 15-12 in the finals at Ronald Reagan High School.

Coral Reef beat MAST 25-9, 25-14 and TERRA 25-18, 25-12, while Coral Gables came from behind to edge Ferguson 22-25, 25-20, 15-10 and beat Palmetto 25-23, 25-21 to reach the finals.

Five days before the tournament, host Coral Gables beat Coral Reef in three sets 25-13, 25-20, 25-21.

Talk about a turnaround.

Coral Reef coach Erin Shelow said: “To come back and beat the very team that defeated us just days earlier - and to do it for the GMAC championship - shows the resilience, character and fight of this group. I’m incredibly proud of how they represented Coral Reef, our program and our school community.”

For the tournament, senior Allison Pedroso led Coral Reef with 28 kills, 7 dig, 4 aces and 3 blocks. Chelsea Dryer, a junior, had 11 blocks, and senior setter Amanda Austen recorded 32 assists. Sophomore Angelina Artega added 13 kills.

Coral Reef improved to 13-9. The Cavaliers are 12-8.

More volleyball

The Florida Christian School girls’ volleyball team won a tournament it hosted by winning every set.

The Patriots defeated Reagan 25-10, 25-7; Palmetto 25-22, 25-13; TERRA 25-14, 25-23; and GMAC Champ Coral Reef 25-15, 25-17.

Top FCS performers were: Skye Williams 41 kills, 10 aces, 30 digs; Amelia Gomez 25 kills, 4 aces, 31 digs; Jenna Cuadra 16 kills, 11 aces; Isabella Sotolongo 15 kills, 3 aces; Allison Mantecon 24 digs, 12 assists; Sophia Broche 82 assists, 22 digs; Veronia Cueto 3 aces.

Bowling

In a battle of unbeatens, the Ferguson boys’ bowling team defeated Braddock to improve to 10-0.

The girls’ team also beat Braddock, and they, too, are 10-0.

BOYS: Ferguson d. Braddock 7-0: Ferg: Remy Dou 225 high game, 616 team high series; Jesus Prieto 211 high game; Rashawn Viart 232 high game; Lexander Perdomo 218 high game. Brd: Jan Gonzalez 248 high game, 633 overall high series; Julian Perez 198 high game; Justin Gonzalez 208 high game.

GIRLS: Ferguson d. Braddock 7-0: Ferg: Isabella Jaramillo 166 high game; Emma Jaramillo 157 high game; Angelie Brito 155 high game. Brd: Rachel Garcia 142 high game.

Swimming

GIRLS: Coral Gables 101, Palmetto 13; Coral Gables 104, Reagan 37: Swimmers of the Meet: Samantha Sears (CG) won 100 back; Beatriz Otero Gimenez (CG) won 50 free; Sophia Snyder (Plm) won 500 free.

BOYS: Coral Gables 89, Palmetto 49; Coral Gables 91, Reagan 52: Swimmers of the Meet: Sebastian Azpurua (CG) won 50 free; Neil Morada (CG) won 100 breast; Luis L. (Rea) 2nd in 200 free; Thomas Ramos (Plm) won 100 fly.

Football

The visiting Archbishop Carroll football team defeated previously unbeaten Westminster Christian 12-3.

The Bulldogs defense stopped Westminster twice inside the 5-yard line to secure the victory. The defensive performance was a total team effort. Josh Velez, Robert Herrera and Jonas Taylor each recorded a sack. Isaiah Suarez, Joel Rodriguez and Coleman Quesada combined for 20 tackles. George Diaz intercepted a pass in the fourth quarter. Dylan Galadza and Will Secola had outstanding two-way performances.

Galadza, who recorded a safety in the fourth quarter to seal the win, made several impactful third and fourth down conversions on offense. Secola rushed for 87 yards on 22 carries and scored the game’s only touchdown. On defense, Secola made a key fourth down stop on the goal line. The Bulldogs improved to 4-0-1.
