The Divine Savior Academy girls’ volleyball team remained undefeated after winning the South Florida High School Showdown hosted by Tribe Volleyball in Pompano Beach.

During the two-day tournament, Divine Savior went 5-0 to improve to 12-0.

Divine Savior defeated Boca Raton 25-15, 25-16; Calvary Christian 25-8, 25-13; Pine Crest 25-22, 25-22; North Broward Prep 26-24, 26-24; and West Palm Beach King’s Academy 25-23, 13-25, 15-4.

The Patriots (11-2) beat Miami Palmetto, Lake Mary, Naples Gulf Coast and Orlando Bishop Moore. Their lone defeat was to Palm Harbour (25-19, 19-25, 15-4).

The Plantation American Heritage girls’ volleyball team won three consecutive games in exciting fashion during Homecoming Week.

The Patriots, winners of four of their last five games, dropped the first set but then rebounded to defeat Cooper City 19-25, 25-18, 25-22, 25-17. Top performers were: Vanessa Camacho 10 kills, 10 digs, 16 receptions, 6 service points, 2 aces; Madison Vanevenhoven 15 service points, 7 aces, 6 kills; Christiana Ferreira 17 assists, 9 service points, 3 aces, 1 kill.

Next, American Heritage beat district opponent ATM 25-15, 20-25, 25-23, 27-25. The Patriots trailed 24-21 in the fourth set, fought off four set points and came back to win the set (and the game) 27-25. Top Performers were: Carly Tabony 34 receptions, 17 digs, 13 service points, 3 aces; Sofia Lisamore 19 assists, 14 digs; Lyla Pack 13 kills, 2 blocks; Sydney Tucker 8 kills, 2 blocks.

The Patriots (9-8) followed up with a 5-set win over Mater Academy 18-25, 25-19, 25-21, 23-25, 15-12. Top performers were: Carly Tabony 26 digs, 22 receptions, 8 service points; Sofia Lisamore 19 assists, 12 digs; Sophia Matthews 14 kills, 10 receptions, 4 digs.

More volleyball standouts

Some volleyball standouts residing in South Florida include Camila Busque of Riviera Prep and Paige Hill of Western.

Busque, a senior, is a libero (defensive specialist) for the 12-5 Bulldogs. She was named MaxPreps Match MVP in a thrilling 5-set win over Coral Reef. She also helped in victories over Coral Gables, Ferguson, Viera, Georgia Savannah Arts Academy, Ransom Everglades, Cardinal Gibbons, Calvary Christian, Cooper City, Carrollton, Miami Country Day and True North.

In addition to her athletic achievements, Camila is an excellent student, maintaining strong academics, while balancing her sports commitments. She also competes for Miami Hype 18 Emilio (#3) travel volleyball.

Born in Uruguay, raised in Brazil and now residing in Miami, Busque is not only a talented student athlete but also a very good student and a role model.

Hill, a senior, is an outside hitter for the 8-10 Wildcats. She totaled 44 kills, 11 aces, 9 blocks, and 61 digs combined against Coral Springs Charter, Miami Country Day and Cypress Bay. She helped Western go 3-2 to place first at the Chaminade-Madonna CM Cares Tournament in Hollywood.

In Florida in Class 7A, via MaxPreps, she is ranked No.5 for kills, No.5 for aces, No.24 for blocks and No.2 for digs. Led by Hill, Western has wins over Fort Lauderdale, Pompano Beach, Piper, Monarch, Miami Country Day twice, Boca Raton Spanish River, and ATM.

Hill, who has 4.0 GPA/3.5 unweighted, also competes for Tribe 18 Elite Navy travel volleyball.

Golf

The 8th-ranked Raiders in Class 1A traveled 150 miles north to test themselves against some of Palm Beach County’s top 1A programs -- Cardinal Newman.

With partly cloudy skies, light winds and near-perfect scoring conditions, Ransom Everglades delivered its best team performance of the season—posting a score of 291 (+3) to edge out host Cardinal Newman by a single stroke. The victory was sealed in dramatic fashion as senior Hugo Stenstrom calmly holed a clutch 3-foot putt on the final green.

Stenstrom placed fourth, and teammates Matteo Bloom and Navraj Suri were fifth and sixth, respectively.

Leading the Wolverines were sophomore Marley Caudle (3-under par 32), senior Danny Garcia (1-under, 34) and junior Matthew Gonzalez (even par, 35).

Sophomores Ryan Nieto and Beckett Castro, 8th grader Luke Mofsky and 7th grader Thomas Zur rounded out an outstanding team outing.

Cross-country

The Doral Academy cross-country program celerbated an outstanding effort during the annual Spanish River Invitational at South County Regional Park in Boca Raton.

In Class 4A, the girls’ teams was runner-up, and the boys’ team placed third with a sub 16:58 team average.

In the girls’ 3A-4A competition, Doral Academy sophomore Nicole Lewis finished first of 269 runners in a personal best 18 minutes 44 seconds. Senior teammate Gaby Gonzalez-Orbegoso ran a personal best 20:14 (PR), good for 18th. Doral has five girls who broke the 21-minute barrier this season -- Lewis, Gonzalez-Orbegoso, seniors Julieta Baudini (19:46) and Megan Lewis (20:22) and junior Lauren Avila (20:42).

In the boys’ 3A-4A race, Doral Academy junior Martin Fernandez continues his impressive first season running cross-country by placing fouth of 389 runners at 15:53. Senior teammate Victor Pedreira also placed in the Top 10 by taking eighth in 16:12.

Bowling

The Ferguson boys’ and girls’ bowling teams swept TERRA as each Falcons team improved to 7-0.

In game one, the boys’ team scored more than 1,000 pins. They repeated that effort in games 2 and 3.

Each bowler averaged more than 200 pins a game and a 600-plus individual series.

Thus, the Falcons recorded a team series of 3,352 pins.

Senior Remy Dou had a high game 278 and a high series 758. High games registered by seniors Miguel Brito (245), Jesus Prieto (267), and Rashawn Viart (218) and junior Lexander Perdomo (245) helped in the team win.

On the girls’ side, freshman Angelie Brito continues to impress, posting a high game 201 and a high series 542.

High games by teammates Emma Jaramillo (168), Isabella Jaramillo (170), Katherine Sanchez (150), and Lily Berardinelli (147) were also noted. Tatiana Chin bowled admirably for TERRA.

Swimming

The Coral Gables girls’ swimming team defeated Hialeah Hight 92-66, and the Coral Gables boys’ swim team also beat Hialeah High 98-62.

Swimmers of the Meet: Girls: Sofia Abril (CG) won 200 IM and 100 Breast; Paloma Morales (CG) won 500 free. Boys: Jacob Ellis (CG) won 200IM and 100 Back; Neil Morada (CG) won 100 fly and 100 breast; Oscar Kramer (CG) won 200 free and 500 free.

Football

The Archbishop Carroll football team defeated visiting Hialeah ABF Academy 48-22.

Offensively the Bulldogs (3-0-1) ran for 441 yards on 61 carries and produced 7 rushing touchdowns. Senior Will Secola led all rushers with 113 yards on 17 carries. Sophomores Rodney Zamora and Dylan Galadza each scored 2 touchdowns.

Galadza also recorded an interception on defense, and Jonas Taylor made 3 sacks, and Kendrick Pembleton had 2 sacks.
