Miami Herald High School Athlete of the Week 2: Westminster Christian football player Daniel Fernandez Jr.

Daniel Fernandez Jr. of the Westminster Christian School football team is the Miami Herald Athlete of the Week for Week 2.

Fernandez, a senior outside linebacker, had 5 tackles (4 for loss), 3 sacks and 2 forced fumbles in a win over Somerset Academy South Homestead.

The nominees included: Nicholas Gobel, St. Brendan football; Cole Durham, Ransom Everglades golf; Marley Caudle, Belen Jesuit golf; Petra Compton, Carrollton golf; Amelia Gomez, Florida Christian School volleyball; Nicole Lewis, Doral Academy cross-country; Martin Fernandez, Doral Academy cross-country; Angelie Brito, Ferguson bowling; and Trevor Tingle, Miami Palmetto golf..

Nearly each week during the 2025-26 high school varsity sports season, the Miami Herald will establish nominees for a poll of top Broward and Miami-Dade high school athletes.

Potential nominees are also received by emailing hssports@miamiherald.com.

Deadline for voting in the poll is around 10 p.m. Thursdays.
