Braddock academics, Cardinal Gibbons wrestling, True North beach volleyball and more

In a battle of unbeatens, True North beach volleyball upset the state’s top ranked 3A team Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas 3-2 in Deerfield Beach.

Each match -- except No.1 doubles -- went to a third set tie-breaker as the Titans improved to 9-0.

Coached by Sissy Cantillo, True North also defeated Miami Doral Academy 5-0, Miami LaSalle 5-0, Southwest Ranches Archbishop McCarthy 5-0, Miami Florida Christian 5-0, Miami Beach 5-0, Miami Coral Reef 5-0, Miami Ferguson 5-0 and Miami Lourdes 4-1. The Titans are 42-3 in sets played.

True North 3, St. Thomas Aquinas 2: No.1 Samantha Rodriguez (sr) / Vero Fumero (soph) won 2-0 (21-8, 21-11). No.4 Gracie Ruiz (fr) / Ariana Correno (fr) won 2-1 (18-21, 21-8, 15-10). No.5 Andrea Aguirre (soph) / Ella Sarti (soph) won 2-1 (15-21, 21-18, 15-10). TN 9-0, STA 12-1.

State academic honor

Braelen Cintron of Miami Braddock was named to the FHSAA Florida Dairy Farmers Academic All-State Team.

She is the first student athlete from Braddock to receive this honor.

Cintron is a four-sport letterwinner (volleyball, basketball, soccer, softball). A captain of the soccer team, she helped the soccer and volleyball teams win district titles this school year. She played right side hitter, wing, power forward, defender, goalkeeper, catcher and outfielder.

Academically, Cintron has a 4.0 unweighted and 5.5 weighted GPA. She is part of seven honors societies.

She is one of 12 female student athletes from FHSAA high schools throughout the state to receive this accolade.

Wrestling commitment

Cardinal Gibbons star wrestler Michael Mocco of Parkland has committed to NCAA Division I University of Iowa. That is consistently one of the top collegiate wrestling programs in the nation.

Mocco, a junior, is a three-time state champion for the Chiefs and placed third as an 8th grader for Coral Springs Charter. He is national freestyle and greco roman champion and is also a member of Team USA in his age group. In the summer, he won a gold medal for Team USA at the U17 World Championships in Amman, Jordan. He is a member of ATT/Mocco Wrestling Academy.

This past high school season, Mocco was named Miami Herald All-Broward Wrestler of the Year (for the second time in his career). He went undefeated at 43-0, capped off by winning state in the 215-pound weight class. He was one of the best in the state once again and turned things up even more in the postseason as he finished off all 12 of his postseason matches in the first round, sweeping through districts, regionals and state.

His father, Steve, a very accomplished amateur wrestler and standout coach, competed for the University of Iowa, before transferring to Oklahoma State. Steve is currently the wrestling coach at MMA power American Top Team in Coconut Creek.

About University of Iowa Wrestling

University of Iowa wrestling is under the direction of five-time Big Ten and three-time NWCA Coach of the Year Tom Brands, who just completed his 19th season as head wrestling coach at the University of Iowa.

A 1996 Olympic gold medalist and member of wrestling’s Hall of Fame, Brands is only the eighth head wrestling coach at the University of Iowa. The former Hawkeye wrestler was a four-time All-American and three-time national champion (1989-92) at Iowa. He has a 291-28-1 (.909) overall and 140-15 (.903) Big Ten coaching record at Iowa. He has a 308-48-1 (.863) career mark and a 139-14 (.909) record at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.

In 19 seasons as Iowa’s head coach, the Sheldon, Iowa, native has led the Hawkeyes to four NCAA and six Big Ten team titles, crowning 14 NCAA champions, 26 Big Ten champions and 109 All-Americans. Iowa has had 200 Academic All-Big Ten recipients, including a school-record 20 in 2023-24. The Hawkeyes have qualified 185 wrestlers for the NCAA Championships in the last 19 years, sending the entire 10-man lineup in 2010, 2014, 2015, 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2023. Iowa has won or shared the Big Ten regular season title 12 times in Brands’ 19 seasons.

The Southwest Ranches Archbishop McCarthy girls’ team beat Key West 18-6 to mark its sixth win of the season, the most in program history.
