Poll: Who should be the Miami Herald’s High School Athlete of the Week? (March 31)
South Florida’s top athletes were recognized recently in the sports of boys’ volleyball, lacrosse, softball, and water polo.
This week, we continue a feature where we ask you to vote for the best performer of the week from baseball, boys’ volleyball, lacrosse, softball, and water polo in Broward and Miami-Dade counties.

David Cohn, Miami Palmetto lacrosse: the senior goaltender / captain was the Player of the Game in a win against Miami Westminster Christian, allowing 2 goals on 9 shots. He played 40 minutes in goal in the win against Miami St. Brendan, recording 7 saves on 11 shots on goal for the 8-5 Panthers.
Carson Kroll, Southwest Ranches Archbishop McCarthy lacrosse: the senior had a game-leading 7 goals and 2 assists with 4 draws controlled and 2 groundballs in a win over Miami Gulliver Prep; totaled 8 goals and 1 assist in a win over Miami Country Day; recorded 3 goals, 2 groundballs and 2 draws controlled in a win over Cooper City; and 8 goals, 2 assists and 2 draws controlled in a close loss to Miami Ransom Everglades.
Gabriel Milano, Miami Doral Academy baseball: the senior went 2-3 with 3 RBI in a win over Springstead Spring Hill and was 2-2 with a home run and 2 RBI in a win over Miami Gulliver Prep. At IMG Academy National Spring Break Classic in Bradenton, he was 3-3 with 2 RBI in a win over Illinois St. Laurence as the Firebirds improved to 15-2-1. He later went 2-2 with 2 HR and 3 RBI against tournament winner IMG Academy and made the All-Tournament team.
Sebastian Piedra, Miami Gulliver Prep water polo: the junior had 5 earned exclusions, 2 steals, 2 assists and 2 goals, including the game winner as the Raiders (13-7) edged Miami Columbus 10-9.
Amare Stoudimare, Plantation American Heritage boys’ volleyball: the senior totaled 15 kills, 5 service points, 3 blocks as the Patriots defeated Don Soffer Aventura to even their record at 3-3.
Meagan Villazon, Miami Doral Academy softball: the senior dominated on the mound, striking out 12 while allowing no runs, five hits and two walks in a complete game 7-inning shutout win as the unbeaten Firebirds, ranked No.4 in the nation by MaxPreps, handed FHSAA defending 2A state champ Monteverde Academy, ranked No.2 nationally, its first loss 10-0.
