Poll: Who should be the Miami Herald’s High School Athlete of the Week? (March 10)
South Florida’s top athletes were recognized recently in the sports of basketball, flag football, soccer and wrestling.
This week, we continue a feature where we ask you to vote for the best performer of the week from basketball and wrestling in Broward and Miami-Dade counties.

Mya Bethel, North Miami wrestling: the senior capped off another undefeated season (this time 20-0) by winning the FHSAA state title at 155 pounds for the Top 10 finishing Pioneers. She went 4-0 at state with four pins, completing her career unbeaten and with four state titles.
Cameron Boozer, Miami Columbus basketball: the senior finished with 20 points and nine rebounds as the Explorers (27-3), the top-ranked team in the nation per MaxPreps, won the Class 7A state championship with an 68-36 win over Windermere in Lakeland. In a state semifinal win over Sanford Seminole 78-48, he led with 26 points, 13 rebounds and four assists.
Elijah Castanon, Miami Christian School wrestling: the 7th grader won an FHSAA state title at 106 pounds in Class 1A. He was 4-0 at state (including a tiebreaker win) to improve his overall record to 28-3.
Kaleb Corbitt, Pompano Blanche Ely basketball: the junior scored a team-high 19 points and went 6-for-6 at the free throw line in the final two minutes as the Tigers (20-9) edged Ponte Vedra a 44-38 victory in the FHSAA Class 5A state championship game in Lakeland. In the state semifinal win over St. Petersburg (67-45), he had 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Abigail Gonzalez, Miami Southridge wrestling: the freshman won an FHSAA state title at 110 pounds, going 4-0 at state to complete the season at 35-1 for the Top 10 finishing Spartans.
Illia Kyryianenko, Hollywood South Broward wrestling: the freshman capped of an undefeated season at 41-0 by winning an FHSAA state title at 132 pounds in Class 3A. He went 4-0 (including 2 close decisions) at state.
Michael Sainz, Pembroke Pines Somerset wrestling: the senior went 4-0 at state to end his season unbeaten at 27-0, while winning an FHSAA state title at 175 pounds and helping the Panthers win their second consecutive 2A team state championship.
Elvis Solis, Homestead South Dade wrestling: the senior completed an undefeated season at 49-0 by winning an FHSAA state title at 144 pounds in Class 3A. He was 4-0 (2 falls, 2 tech falls) at state as the powerhouse Buccaneers won another team state title.
Damian Soto, Miami Mater Lakes Academy wrestling: the senior won an FHSAA state title at 190 pounds in Class 1A. Improving to 35-3, he went 4-0 at state, including a win over last year’s state champ in the finals to help the Bears win their first IBT state team title. They won state duals in January.
Christian Yeargin, Fort Lauderdale Stranahan basketball: the junior scored a game-high 21 points with four assists and six rebounds (none bigger than his rebound and assist off a teammate’s missed free throw with seconds to play to set-up the winning basket) as the Dragons (25-7 ) recorded an incredible 63-62 comeback win over St. Petersburg Gibbs for the FHSAA Class 4A state title in Lakeland. In the state semifinal, he had 20 points to help lead Stranahan to a 72-55 victory over Jacksonville Ribault.
