Doral baseball, Palmetto lacrosse doing well. Plus state soccer nominees, volleyball and more
The Miami Doral Academy baseball team shut out visiting Pembroke Pines Somerset Academy 2-0.
The Firebirds (7-2) scored once in the fourth and another in the sixth.
Winning pitcher Marcelo Rodriguez went 5.2 innings, allowing no runs, two hits, three walks, while striking out five. Jadyn Nunez tossed 1.1 innings of shutout ball, giving up no runs, no hits, no walks and striking out two for the save.
Somerset pitcher Julio Cardosa went the distance in the tough loss. He tossed six innings, allowing two runs (none earned) on three hits and four walks, while striking out four.
For Doral, Caleb Hernandez and Dylan Prince each had a hit and scored. Gavin Ruvalcaba had an RBI single. Meyer Cabrera had both hits for Somerset (5-4).
Doral Academy followed up with a 19-0 win over Hollywood South Broward. In Pembroke Pines, Nova suffered its first loss of the season, in a close one, 3-2, to Pembroke Pines Charter.

The Miami Palmetto boys’ lacrosse team beat Parkland Stoneman Douglas 7-3.
Senior captain David Cohn stood strong in goal, holding the Eagles to two goals on eight shots. Senior Jake Hawkins led the team in scoring with 2 goals.
For Douglas (1-5), Zaid Poppen had one goal and one assist. Josh Johnson and Noah Ozan also scored. Nate Klein added an assist.
Palmetto improved to 5-3 with other victories against Western, West Palm Beach King’s Academy, Key West and Southwest Ranches Archbishop McCarthy.

Basketball
The Orange Bowl Florida High School Basketball Showcase, presented by Memorial Healthcare System, is 8 a.m. Saturday, March 15 at the Davis Posnack JCC in Davie.
The event is free to high school juniors and seniors to showcase their hoop skills in front of coaches, representing 30-plus colleges and universities. Scholarships and/or financial aid can be awarded to more than 400 student athletes.
