Lacrosse
History was made as Homestead Keys Gate Charter, represented by the Squadron Girls Lacrosse Team, as the school competed in its first official high school girls’ lacrosse game against host Miami St. Brendan High School, another first-year program, led by Coach Jock-Russell Willers.
The game marks a significant milestone for the growth of girls’ lacrosse in Homestead.
This historic moment would not have been possible without the dedication of Coach Jose Herrera, who has worked tirelessly since last year alongside junior captain Nylene Ramirez to build the team from the ground up. Through fundraising and outreach efforts, Herrera successfully attained players from Gateway Middle School, Robert Morgan, Homestead High, Keys Gate Charter, and Somerset Academy to form a united squad.
Although Herrera is no longer with Keys Gate Charter, he remains the head coach of the Squadron Girls Lacrosse Team and the driving force behind the program’s success. Leading the team on game day is Coach Kelvin Justice, who also serves as head coach for the Keys Gate Charter boys’ lacrosse team. Justice, a pioneer in Florida lacrosse, was one of the first high schoolers in the early 2000s to establish a boys’ team, making his leadership of this historic game especially meaningful.
Coach Kelvin Justice expressed his excitement about the milestone:
“It’s incredible to see how far we’ve come. Girls’ lacrosse in Homestead was just a dream, and now it’s a reality. This is about more than just a game – it’s about giving young women the opportunity to compete, grow, and be part of something bigger than themselves.”
Coach Jock-Russell Willers of St. Brendan shared his thoughts on the game:
“Both programs are starting from scratch, but that’s what makes this game so exciting. We’re watching the future of girls’ lacrosse take shape in South Florida, and I couldn’t be prouder to be a part of it.”
Junior Captain Nylene Ramirez, who has been instrumental in recruiting and motivating her teammates, added:
“We’ve worked so hard to get here. It’s amazing to finally see everything come together. I hope this inspires more girls to try lacrosse because it’s truly life-changing.”
Eighth-grader Andrea Montes also shared what playing lacrosse has meant to her:
“Lacrosse has given me confidence like no other sport. I feel stronger, faster, and more connected with my team. This is just the beginning for us!”
For many players, lacrosse is more than just a sport – it’s an opportunity to grow on and off the field. Andrea’s mother, reflecting on her daughter’s journey, said:
“I definitely feel that this has given my daughter a desire to go to college. Her confidence has increased, and she has shown more dedication to lacrosse than any other sport she has tried. Lacrosse is inspiring young girls to find themselves in a sport that is new to everyone. I don’t know, she’s happy, and she has a spark because of lacrosse. As a parent, we are enjoying seeing this side of her come out.”
Coach Jose Herrera, the founder of girls’ lacrosse in Homestead, emphasized the importance of this moment:
“The growth of girls’ lacrosse in South Florida is just beginning. This is the first time any high school from Homestead has had a girls’ lacrosse team, and that’s something special. We took advantage of the new policies to build a team that brings together girls from multiple schools. This isn’t just about one program – it’s about creating opportunities for young women to play, compete, and believe in themselves.”
