Poll: Who should be the Miami Herald’s High School Athlete of the Week? (Feb. 17)

South Florida’s top athletes were recognized recently in the sports of basketball, cheerleading and soccer.

This week, we continue a feature where we ask you to vote for the best performer of the week from basketball, cheerleading, soccer and wrestling in Broward and Miami-Dade counties.

Take our poll below to cast your vote. The poll will be open until Thursday, Feb. 20, around 10 p.m. You may vote as often as you like until then.

Mya Bethel, North Miami wrestling: the senior won a GMAC title at 155 pounds to remain undefeated while helping the Pioneers place second in the team standings.

Connor Bonney, Miami Palmetto wrestling: the 175-pound junior remained unbeaten by winning a GMAC title. He defeated a South Dade wrestler by major decision in the finals.

Yva Cao, Miami Lourdes cheerleading: the senior, a two-year captain and four-year varsity letterwinner, was a featured tumbler, main base and flyer at the FHSAA state championships, helping the Bobcats win a state title in Class 1A Medium, their first state championship. They also recorded the highest score of any team at state and then competed at nationals.

Gianna Gray, Miami Lourdes soccer: the freshman scored the winner four minutes into the first 10-minute overtime as the Bobcats (15-1-3) won the Region 4-5A title with a 1-0 victory over Southwest Ranches Archbishop McCarthy.

Diego Medina-Pagan, Pembroke Pines Charter soccer: the junior excelled on defense and also scored his second goal of the season, the game winner, as the Jaguars (18-0-2) won the Region 4-5A title over Miami Varela 3-1.

Michael Mocco, Fort Lauderdale Cardinal Gibbons wrestling: the 215-pound junior (33-0) won his record-tying fourth BCAA title (one at Coral Springs Charter and three at Gibbons) while helping the Chiefs win their eighth consecutive BCAA team championship.

Alex Morejon, Miami Mater Lakes Academy soccer: the freshman goalkeeper stopped numerous shots to record a key 1-0 shutout victory over Miami Belen Jesuit for the Region 4-4A title, a school first for the Bears (22-1-1).

Abigail Moyer, Coral Springs wrestling: the sophomore (18-5) won a BCAA title at 130 pounds while helping the Colts win the BCAA team championship.

Savanna Nicholson, Fort Lauderdale Cardinal Gibbons basketball: in a District 13-3A quarterfinal win over Don Soffer Aventura, the senior scored 19 points to eclipse the 1,000th career point mark. She also added 4 assists and 2 steals in the victory.

Willie White, Homestead South Dade wrestling: the senior at 165 pounds remained undefeated by winning the GMAC title to help the powerhouse Buccaneers win the team title.
