The Miami Westwood Christian boys’ basketball team won the District 16-1A title, easily defeating Miami Schoolhouse Prep 67-28.

The Warriors (15-7) play Miami Christian (12-9) in a region quarterfinal. Schoolhouse Prep (12-9) also advances, playing District 14-1A champ Weston Sagemont (17-8). Schoolhouse Prep beat Miami Christian 67-53 in a district semifinal.

In the District 15-2A Tournament, the state’s top ranked 2A Miami Riviera Prep boys’ basketball team needed overtime to defeat Miami Westminster Christian 54-50 for the title.

Mason and Myles Fuentes and Jeremy Jenkins combined for the final 12 points for the Bulldogs in overtime (10-of-10 from the free throw line) to assure the title. In just its ninth season, Riviera Prep has five district championships in boys’ basketball.

Led by Alec Arnholt and Orlando Roche, Miami Belen Jesuit improved to 19-8 with a District 16-6A finals win over Miami Norland 50-41.

In girls’ hoops, North Miami (17-8) -- led by J’adore Hayes (34 pts, 30 rebs, 5 blks, 2 stls, 1 ast) -- beat Miami Lourdes 69-36 for the District 16-5A title.

Miami Palmer Trinity won its fifth district championship in six seasons and 13th in school history as the Falcons defeated Homestead Somerset Academy South 61-7 for the District 16-2A title.

Region soccer

BOYS: Region 4-5A Semifinal: Varela 1, Archbishop McCarthy 0: Damian Ortega scored the winner off an assist from Anthony Perez. Keeper Maximilian Rojas recorded the shutout. For the region title, Varela (9-6-2) will play Pembroke Pines Charter (17-0-2).

BOYS: Region 4-4A Semifinal: Belen Jesuit 2, Pembroke Pines Somerset Academy 1 (OT): Fernando Mendoza scored the winner three minutes into the first overtime. Luis Garcia-Chacon scored in regulation, and keeper Gabriel Mejia allowed 1 goal and made 2 saves. For the region title, the Wolverines (15-5-6) will play Mater Lakes Academy (21-1-1).

GIRLS: Region 4-6A Semifinal: St. Thomas Aquinas 4, Palm Beach Gardens Dwyer 0: Bianca Raskin 1 goal, 3 assists; Aimee Colson 1 goal; Madison Mckeon 1 goal; Camryn Smith 1 goal; Erin Smith 1 assist; Gkp Camryn McEwen 6 saves, shutout. For the region title, the Raiders (17-1-3) will play Cooper City (16-3-1), which edged Loxahatchee Seminole Ridge 4-3 in another region semifinal. St. Thomas Aquinas beat the Cowboys 6-1 in the district finals.

Wrestling

The Pembroke Pines Somerset Academy wrestling team won the Colby Singletary Memorial Invitational, besting 39 other teams.

On July 6, 2019, Colby Singletary was in a tragic accident that took his life. Colby was 18-years-old and entering his senior year. He was a two-time state champ in wrestling and a star football player for Palmetto Ridge High School in Naples.

Panthers results: 150 Tristan Sainz champ; 157 Eric Hodge champ; 175 Michael Sainz champ; 126 Carlos Sainz runner-up; 138 Matteo Gonzalez runner-up; 190 Mateo Martinez runner-up; 165 Bluny Davilma third; 144 Darion Shannon fourth; 113 Alejandro Toro fifth; 120 Andre Rossi fifth.

Hodge was chosen Outstanding Wrestler with four pins, a techincal fall and a huge win against a state champ in the finals (Asher Bacon of Naples First Baptist).
