Poll: Who should be the Miami Herald’s High School Athlete of the Week? (Feb. 3)

South Florida’s top athletes were recognized recently in the sports of basketball, soccer and wrestling.

This week, we continue a feature where we ask you to vote for the best performer of the week from basketball, soccer and wrestling in Broward and Miami-Dade counties.

Take our poll below to cast your vote. The poll will be open until Thursday, Feb. 6, around 10 p.m. You may vote as often as you like until then.

Veronica Aguilar, Miami Lourdes soccer: the sophomore had 2 goals and 1 assist in a district semifinal win for the Bobcats (12-1-2) over Miami Mater Academy Charter and a hat trick (3 goals) in a district final win over Miami Varela.

Alexis Bennetot, Miami Florida Christian soccer: the senior had 1 goal in a district semifinal win for the Patriots (8-8-3) over True North and two goals in a district final win over Divine Savior.

Valentina Mangles, Miami LaSalle soccer: the senior had 1 goal and 2 assists in a district semifinal win for the Royal Lions (14-5-1) over Miami Silver Palms Somerset Academy and set-up the tying goal to force overtime in the district final shootout win over Gulliver Prep, where she also scored in the shootout.

Thiago Marchisone, Miami Beach soccer: the junior scored the winner on a header in a 1-0 victory for the Hi-Tides (15-3-2) over Miami Braddock for a district championship. He also had a goal and an assist in a 3-2 win over Homestead in the district semifinals.

Nicholas Marques, Davie NSU University soccer: the senior had 1 goal in a district semifinal win for the Sharks (14-3-1) over Fort Lauderdale Calvary Christian and 1 goal in a district final win over Fort Lauderdale Cardinal Gibbons.

Keagan Mesina, Miami Mater Lakes Academy wrestling: the freshman went 3-0 at the FHSAA Wrestling State Duals in Kissimmee to help the Bears win the Class 1A team competition state title, their first state team title in program history. Mesina (120 pounds) went 3-0, scoring pins over opponents from Naples St. John Neumann and Merritt Island and a 15-0 technical fall over an opponent from Key West.

Elvis Solis, Homestead South Dade wrestling: the senior went 3-0 at the FHSAA Wrestling State Duals in Kissimmee to help the Buccaneers win the Class 3A team competition state title for a state record seven times in eight appearances. Solis (144 pounds) went 3-0, pinning opponents from Parkland Stoneman Douglas, Lakeland George Jenkins and Wellington.

Brooklyn Schiffrin, Miami Palmer Trinity soccer: the junior had 3 goals and 1 assist in a district quarterfinal win for the Falcons (10-4-3) over Miami Mater Bay Academy, 3 goals and 1 assist in a district semifinal win over Miami Riviera Prep and 1 goal and 1 assist in a district final win over Miami Westminster Christian.

Juliana Soto, Plantation American Heritage soccer: the 8th grader added to her team leading scoring efforts with a hat trick (3 goals) in a district semifinal win for the Patriots (14-1) over Miami Norland and 2 goals in a district final win over Pembroke Pines Somerset.

Sydney Wilson, Miami High basketball: the senior and four-year starter helped lead the Stingarees to their fourth consecutive GMAC title. She scored a co-team high 18 points in the finals over Miami Southridge, after beating Miami Northwestern and Miami Killian.
