Poll: Who should be the Miami Herald’s High School Athlete of the Week? (Jan. 13)

South Florida’s top athletes were recognized recently in the sports of basketball and soccer.

This week, we continue a feature where we ask you to vote for the best performer of the week from basketball and soccer in Broward and Miami-Dade counties.

Take our poll below to cast your vote. The poll will be open until Thursday, Jan. 16, around 10 p.m. You may vote as often as you like until then.

Jesus Alvarenga, Miami Jackson soccer: the sophomore goalkeeper blocked 2 shots in a shootout as Miami Jackson (9-1-1) handed Ferguson (7-1-1) its first loss of the season 1-1 (4-2 on PKs) in a GMAC Tournament quarterfinal.

Ana Levy Armesto, Miami Gulliver Prep soccer: the senior goalkeeper made 17 saves on 20 shots to lead the Raiders in a 1-1 tie with Miami Lourdes. Gulliver is now 7-5-2 and Lourdes 8-1-2.

Sophie Barnes, Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas soccer: the sophomore had 2 goals and 3 assists during the Andie Studley Memorial Tournament in Texas, where the Raiders (11-0-3) went 1-0-2. She had two assists in a 2-2 tie with Texas Wylie East, 1 goal in a 3-3 tie with Texas Allen and 1 goal and 1 assist in a 2-0 win over Texas Vandegrift. Returning to South Florida, she scored two more goals in a 4-0 win over host Miami Doral Academy and prior the winner in a 1-0 victory over Pembroke Pines Charter.

Santiago Bergonzi, Miami Coral Gables soccer: the senior had a hat trick (3 goals) in a 5-1 win over Keys Gate as the Cavaliers improved to 7-4.

Emma Esparza, Miami Palmer Trinity basketball: the sophomore recorded her first triple-double with 12 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists as the Falcons (6-6) defeated Coconut Creek North Broward Prep 69-41.

Alexandra Gonzalez Casar, Miami LaSalle basketball: the sophomore recorded her 9th double-double of the season as the Royal Lions (10-1) defeated Florida Christian. She had 15 points and 11 rebounds

J’adore Hayes, North Miami basketball: the junior had 31 points, 25 rebounds and 5 blocks in a 60-41 win over Hollywood South Broward as the Pioneers improved to 9-3.

Savanna Nicholson, Fort Lauderdale Cardinal Gibbons basketball: the senior averaged 21.3 points per game, 3.7 assists per game and 2 steals per game at the Queen of Palms Holiday Tournament in Fort Myers, where the Chiefs (8-6) went 1-2 (Cardinal Gibbons 49, Naples Palmetto Ridge 46; Miami Monsignor Pace 58, Cardinal Gibbons 53; Fort Myers Bishop Verot 51, Cardinal Gibbons 47). She then followed up with 27 points, 4 steals and 3 assists in a @SUTS Report New Year’s Classic win over Miami Norland at Coral Springs High School and 41 points in a home win over Delray American Heritage.
