Cardinal Gibbons basketball, St. Thomas Aquinas soccer, Westminster Christian soccer and more

Savanna Nicholson of Fort Lauderdale Cardinal Gibbons girls’ basketball had an outstanding winter break and afterward.

The senior averaged 21.3 points per game, 3.7 assists per game and 2 steals per game at the Queen of Palms Holiday Tournament in Fort Myers, where the Chiefs went 1-2 in three close games (Cardinal Gibbons 49, Naples Palmetto Ridge 46; Miami Monsignor Pace 58, Cardinal Gibbons 53; Fort Myers Bishop Verot 51, Cardinal Gibbons 47).

She followed up with 27 points, 4 steals and 3 assists in a @SUTS Report New Year’s Classic win over Miami Norland at Coral Springs High School and 41 points, 2 assists and 2 steals in a home win over Delray American Heritage.

After the winter break, sophomore Emma Esparaza of Miami Palmer Trinity girls’ basketball recorded her first triple-double with 12 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists as the Falcons (6-6) defeated Coconut Creek North Broward Prep 69-41.

J’adore Hayes, a junior, continues to shine as she had 31 points, 25 rebounds and 5 blocks to lead North Miami over South Broward 60-41.

Sophie Barnes of St. Thomas Aquinas girls’ soccer also excelled during the winter break and beyond.

The sophomore had 2 goals and 3 assists during the Andie Studley Memorial Tournament in Texas, where the Raiders went 1-0-2. She had two assists in a 2-2 tie with Texas Wylie East, 1 goal in a 3-3 tie with Texas Allen and 1 goal and 1 assist in a 2-0 win over Texas Vandegrift.

Returning to South Florida, Barnes scored two more goals in a 4-0 win over host Miami Doral Academy and prior the winner in a 1-0 victory over Pembroke Pines Charter.

In boys’ soccer, Miami Westminster Christian edged Miami Columbus in a shootout to win the Red Card for Cancer Tournament in Vero Beach.

Tied at one at the end of regulation, penalty kicks determined the winner as the Warriors (8-4-1) out scored Columbus 4-2 in the shootout for the title. Diego Diaz, Marky Ruiz, Seba Salas and Luciano Zuniga scored in the shootout, while keepers Javier Suarez and Lucas Pozo each made a save.

Gabriel Suarez scored off an assist from Zuniga in the first half for Westminster Christian. Pax Cortizas scored with the assist to Benjmain Ochoa for Columbus (7-6-4) as the teams were tied at one at halftime.
