The North Miami boys’ basketball team won two games at the Sunshine State Basketball Explosion at Coconut Creek High School.
The Pioneers beat Coconut Creek 65-51 in overtime and Georgia West Hall 48-37.
Sparked by Jonathan Joseph, Jeano Joachim and Kingson Valcourt, North Miami improved to 8-2, while riding a 7-game win streak.
Coconut Creek (1-7) played better than its record in losses to North Miami and Miami Braddock. Nash Youte led the Cougars.

Orange Bowl basketball
After running recently the final day results of the boys’ and girls’ championship games as well as the third, fifth and seventh place games of the Junior Orange Bowl Basketball Classic, here are results from the first two days of the three-day tournament at Miami Westminster Christian School.

Football honors
The nominees for the 2024 Florida Dairy Farmers Mr. Football and Football Coach of the Year are the first-round winners in each of the state classifications as voted by media.
They include locals:
Andrew Indorf, Sr Quarterback, St. Thomas Aquinas (State Class 5A Player of the Year) helped his team to a 12-3 record and the Class 5A state title by completing 226-of-328 passes for 2,868 yards with 31 TDs and 9 interceptions. Also rushed for 317 yards on 32 carries (9.9 avg.) and 8 TDs.
Leon Strawder, Jr Quarterback, Northwestern (State Class 3A Player of the Year) helped his team to a 12-2 record and the Class 3A state championship by completing 168-of-256 passes for 2,677 yards with 41 TDs and 8 interceptions. Rushed for 205 yards on 27 carries (7.6 avg.) with 3 TDs.
Coach Roger Harriott, St. Thomas Aquinas (State Class 5A Coach of the Year) led his team to a 12-3 record and the Class 5A state title, his sixth consecutive championship. In 10 years at Aquinas, Harriott has posted a 129-14 record with eight state titles and two state runner-up finishes.
Coach Mike Smith, Plantation American Heritage (State Class 4A Coach of the Year) led his team to a 12-2 record and the Class 4A state title. In three years as head coach, Smith has compiled a 35-7 record, including a state runner-up finish in 2022.
Coach Teddy Bridgewater, Northwestern (State Class 3A Coach of the Year) in his first year as a head coach, the former NFL quarterback and Northwestern alum led his team to a 12-2 record and the Class 3A state championship. It was Northwestern’s eighth state title overall, but its first since winning three straight championships from 2017-19.
Coach Dameon Jones, Chaminade-Madonna (State Class 1A Coach of the Year) led his team to a 13-2 record and a third straight state title. In nine years at Chaminade he has posted a 106-15 record with seven state titles and two state runnerup finishes. In 19 years (10 at Hallandale) he has a 180-32 record.
