Miami Beach soccer wins in San Diego. Plus basketball, golf, swimming, NSU soccer and more
The Miami Beach boys’ soccer team traveled to San Diego, California for two games, winning both.
The Hi-Tides first defeated the nation’s No.7-ranked San Diego St. Augustine 3-1.
Tomas Visintini scored twice, and Evan Rice had a goal. Kai Somoano, Tomas Cortez and Jamary Joseph recorded one assist apiece.
The Saints, the defending California state champions, are 2-2.
Miami Beach followed up with a 1-0 victory over San Diego Torrey Pines.
Tomas Visintini scored the winner off an assist from Kai Somoano, and goalkeeper Lenonx Munoz posted his fifth shutout.
The Falcons, a 10-time state winner, are 3-2. Miami Beach is 8-0-1.
In games in South Florida, the Davie NSU University School boys’ soccer team shut out Pembroke Pines Somerset Academy 3-0.
Nicholas Marques scored two goals, and Raul Leyva added one. Goaleeper Matthew Jean Baptiste recorded his fourth shutout.
The Sharks (6-1-1) are gearing for the finals of the Champions League against South Broward.
Led by junior Joey Ben Ezra and senior Julian Mendez, South Broward is 8-1, after beating St. Thomas Aquinas 4-1.
The Bulldogs have also defeated Columbus 2-1, Highlands Christian 3-0, Coral Gables 2-0, Nova 4-2, Downtown Doral 3-1, Coconut Creek 3-2, and Deerfield Beach 3-0. Their lone loss is to Boca Raton 2-1.
Also, Braddock edged JC Bermudez 1-0 with Leo Pinera scoring the winner, and goalkeeper Matthew Gonzalez posting the shutout for the Bulldogs (9-0-3).
In girls’ soccer, Miami Lourdes edged Southwest Ranches Archbishop McCarthy 1-0.
Andrea Mazin scored the winner, and goalkeeper Lillian Graham notched the shutout as the Bobcats improved to 7-0-1.

Swimming honors
Katia Garcia of Miami Braddock was named the Florida Dairy Farmers Class 4A Boys’ Swimming Coach of the Year in voting by a statewide panel of prep swim coaches.
The Bulldogs won the program’s first state title in swimming, following two seasons of runner-up finishes. They also won the GMAC title two consecutive seasons.
Garcia was eligible for overall state boys’ swimming coaching honors, but Class 3A Boys’ Swimming Coach of the Year Gus Calado of Nease took that award. Nease boys won their third consecutive state title.
Golf honors
Sophomore Sohan Patel of Plantation American Heritage was named the Florida Dairy Farmers Class 2A Boys’ Golfer of the Year in a vote of the state’s district golf chairmen.
He won the Class 2A state title, besting a solid field. By becoming 2A boys’ golfer of the year, he was eligible for the overall state boys’ golfer of the year honor. That award went to Winter Haven senior Anthony Monteleone, who won the Class 3A state title. Monteleone shot (71-70) 141 over 36 holes at Mission Inn Resort and Club at Howey-in-the-Hills. Patel fired (68-66) 134.
The Florida Dairy Farmers High School Sports Awards program exemplifies Florida Dairy Farmers’ commitment to the state’s youth. This marks the 33rd year of these unique awards as it honors the state’s top athletes and coaches in all FHSAA sanctioned and recognized sports. The program also emphasizes to young people the importance of keeping dairy products a primary part of their diet in their overall nutrition plan.

More basketball
The 2024 Junior Orange Bowl Basketball Classic, featuring eight boys’ teams and eight girls’ teams is Dec. 27, 28 and 30 at Westminster Christian School, 6855 SW 152nd St. Palmetto Bay.
Eight games begin at 10 a.m. on Dec. 27. Championship games are 7:30 p.m. (girls) and 9 p.m. (boys) on Dec. 30.
This is the 32nd edition of this annual event, which has welcomed teams from 21 states, the District of Columbia, Canada, Puerto Rico and Slovenia.
This year’s field includes five newcomers as well as four prior Junior Orange Bowl Basketball Classic champions.
The boys’ division consists of Mater Lakes Academy, Miami Norland, Palmetto, Mt. St. Joseph (Maryland), Pembroke Pines Charter, Roman Catholic (Pennsylvania), Westminster Christian, Woodward Academy (Georgia).
The girls’ division consists of Bradley Central (Tennessee), Doral Academy, Magnificat (Ohio), Miami Senior, SLAM Academy, Southridge, Springboro (Ohio), Woodward Academy (Georgia).
NOTE: The 2024 Classic will see the return of three former tournament champions (Mt. St. Joseph Boys 2016 & 2019; Roman Catholic Boys 2005; Miami Senior Girls 2021), as well as defending state champions (Miami Norland Boys — Florida 5A; Pembroke Pines Charter Boys — Florida 6A, Bradley Central Girls — Tennessee 4A (2023 & 2024).
NOTE: Roman Catholic boys start the season ranked No.21, and Bradley Central girls are ranked No.13 in early-season MaxPreps polls. There are strong contenders on both sides of the bracket, with many other teams coming off final-four appearances in Ohio, Georgia and Florida. Mt. St. Joseph boys are the defending Baltimore Catholic champions.
