Columbus basketball, North Miami soccer excel. Plus volleyball honors and more hoops and soccer

Cameron Boozer scored a game-high 31 points -- including three clutch shots -- as the nation’s No.3-ranked Miami Columbus boys’ basketball team defeated the nation’s No.2-ranked Washington D.C. Gonzaga 85-79 in triple overtime at Miami Dade College.

Boozer sank the tying 3-pointer to force overtime, another 3-pointer to send the game into double overtime and a 3-pointer to tie things again en route to a third overtime.

Gonzaga out scored Columbus 18-16 in the first quarter. They each scored 11 in the second quarter. Columbus out scored Gonzaga 14-6 in the third. Then Gonzaga out scored Columbus 20-14 in the fourth. Each scored six in the first overtime and 11 in the second extra session. Columbus won the game with a 13-7 third overtime.

Columbus is 5-1 and Gonzaga 1-1.

Basketball tournament

The 2024 Junior Orange Bowl Basketball Classic, featuring eight boys’ teams and eight girls’ teams is Dec. 27, 28 and 30 at Westminster Christian School, 6855 SW 152nd St, Palmetto Bay.

Eight games begin at 10 a.m. on Dec. 27. Championship games are 7:30 p.m. (girls) and 9 p.m. (boys) on Dec. 30.

This is the 32nd edition of this annual event, which has welcomed teams from 21 states, the District of Columbia, Canada, Puerto Rico and Slovenia.

This year’s field includes five newcomers as well as four prior Junior Orange Bowl Basketball Classic champions.

The boys’ division consists of Mater Lakes Academy, Miami Norland, Palmetto, Mt. St. Joseph (Maryland), Pembroke Pines Charter, Roman Catholic (Pennsylvania), Westminster Christian, Woodward Academy (Georgia).

The girls’ division consists of Bradley Central (Tennessee), Doral Academy, Magnificat (Ohio), Miami Senior, SLAM Academy, Southridge, Springboro (Ohio), Woodward Academy (Georgia).

NOTE: The 2024 Classic will see the return of three former tournament champions (Mt. St. Joseph Boys 2016 & 2019; Roman Catholic Boys 2005; Miami Senior Girls 2021), as well as defending state champions (Miami Norland Boys – Florida 5A; Pembroke Pines Charter Boys – Florida 6A, Bradley Central Girls – Tennessee 4A (2023 & 2024).

NOTE: Roman Catholic boys start the season ranked No.21, and Bradley Central girls are ranked No.13 in early season MaxPreps polls. Strong contenders on both sides of the bracket with many other teams coming off final four appearances in Ohio, Georgia and Florida. Mt. St. Joseph boys are the defending Baltimore Catholic champion.

Soccer

After dropping four of its first five games, the North Miami girls’ soccer team is on a five-game unbeaten streak.

The Pioneers (4-4-2) beat North Miami Beach 1-0, Krop 3-0 and Mater Academy Charter 2-1. They recorded scoreless ties with Keys Gate and Hialeah.

Earlier in the season, North Miami shut out Killian 1-0. The Pioneers lost to MAST, Hialeah Gardens, ATM and Booker T. Washington.

Volleyball honors

Julie Doan Kurenuma of 2A Miami Westminster Christian was third for Florida Dairy Farmers Girls’ Volleyball State Coach of the Year following a final round of voting by a statewide panel of high school volleyball coaches and state media representatives..

Last year’s winner Lisa Zielinski of 6A state champ Fort Lauderdale St. Thomas Aquinas was fourth. Each was their classificiation’s coach of the year in the state to be eligible for the overall state honor.

For top player of the year honors, Gigi Artiles of 2A state champ Westminster Christian was seventh in the voting. She was named 2A player of the year to qualify for the overall state honor voting.
