Marquez leads Gulliver. Hayes lifts North Miami. Plus volleyball honors, soccer & more hoops

Jacob Marquez scored a career-high 40 points, including a full court shot at the buzzer to lift the Miami Gulliver Prep boys’ basketball team over St. Petersburg 93-92 in overtime during the National HoopFeast Tournament in Wesley Chapel.

The event featured boys’ and girls’ high school basketball teams from Canada, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, and South Carolina.

In the win, the Raiders rallied from a 15-point deficit in the fourth quarter with Marquez scoring 17 points of his 40 points in that quarter. With 1.2 seconds left and trailing by three, Luke Mansfield hits a 3-pointer to force overtime.

Down by two with two seconds left in overtime, Marquez broke open on the inbound, took one dribble from the opposite free throw line and then sank the winning full court shot at the buzzer as Gulliver Prep improved to 3-0.

Marquez also had eight assists and three steals. Daniel Wood scored 24 points (6-of-6 3-pointers) with four assists and two steals. Mansfield added 13 points, seven rebounds and three assists.

Prior in the tournament, Gulliver Prep defeated Tampa Carrollwood Day 65-52.

Marquez again led the way with 25 points, six assists and five steals. Caden Roberts totaled 12 points, three assists and three steals, and Mansfield contributed eight points, four rebounds and two steals.

At the Thanksgiving Turkey Day Shootout in West Palm Beach, North Miami girls beat Palm Beach Central and Riviera Beach Suncoast. J’adore Hayes had 41 points, 20 rebounds and five blocks against Palm Beach Central and 40 points, 20 rebounds and four blocks against Suncoast.

Upcoming tournament

The 2024 Junior Orange Bowl Basketball Classic, featuring eight boys’ teams and eight girls’ teams is Dec. 27, 28 and 30 at Westminster Christian School, 6855 SW 152nd St, Palmetto Bay.

Eight games begin at 10 a.m. on Dec. 27. Championship games are 7:30 p.m. (girls) and 9 p.m. (boys) on Dec. 30.

This is the 32nd edition of this annual event, which has welcomed teams from 21 states, the District of Columbia, Canada, Puerto Rico and Slovenia.

This year’s field includes five newcomers as well as four prior Junior Orange Bowl Basketball Classic champions.

The boys’ division consists of Mater Lakes Academy, Miami Norland, Palmetto, Mt. St. Joseph (Maryland), Pembroke Pines Charter, Roman Catholic (Pennsylvania), Westminster Christian, Woodward Academy (Georgia).

The girls’ division consists of Bradley Central (Tennessee), Doral Academy, Magnificat (Ohio), Miami Senior, SLAM Academy, Southridge, Springboro (Ohio), Woodward Academy (Georgia).

NOTE: The 2024 Classic will see the return of three former tournament champions (Mt. St. Joseph Boys 2016 & 2019; Roman Catholic Boys 2005; Miami Senior Girls 2021), as well as defending state champions (Miami Norland Boys – Florida 5A; Pembroke Pines Charter Boys – Florida 6A, Bradley Central Girls – Tennessee 4A (2023 & 2024).

NOTE: Roman Catholic boys start the season ranked No.21, and Bradley Central girls are ranked No.13 in early season MaxPreps polls. Strong contenders on both sides of the bracket with many other teams coming off final four appearances in Ohio, Georgia and Florida. Mt. St. Joseph boys are the defending Baltimore Catholic champion.

Volleyball honors

Gigi Artiles of Westminster Christian is the Florida Dairy Farmers Class 2A State Volleyball Player of the Year, after balloting by a statewide panel of high school volleyball coaches and prep media representatives.

The junior outside hitter helped the Warriors win a state title, going 22-5. She had 375 kills, 274 digs, 44 aces, 35 blocks and a .285 hitting percentage. She has committed to play volleyball at the University of Georgia.

Westminster Christian Coach Julie Doan Kurenuma is the Florida Dairy Farmers Class 2A State Volleyball Coach of the Year.

She coached the Warriors to the Class 2A state title with a 22-5 record. In 21 years at the school, she has compiled a 507-116 record with two state titles (2016 and 2024) and had a string of five consecutive state runner-up finishes, before winning this year’s championship.

St. Thomas Aquinas Coach Lisa Zielinski is the Florida Dairy Farmers Class 6A State Volleyball Coach of the Year.

She coached the Raiders (22-7) to their second consecutive Class 6A state title. In 36 years at Aquinas, she has compiled a 914-199 record with eight state titles and 18 Final Four appearances.

Artiles is a finalist for Miss Volleyball of all classifications, while Doan Kurenuma and Zielinski are eligible for overall state coach of the year honors.
