Miami Palmer Trinity’s Remi Bacardi dominated during her high school golf career like few have in Miami-Dade County history.

On Wednesday afternoon, that career nearly finished with an individual state championship.

Unfortunately for Bacardi, that wasn’t in the cards as she fell four strokes short of the title after a two-day score of 135 at the Class 1A state championships at Howey-in-the-Hills.

Bacardi’s score finished just behind Montverde Academy’s Zilin Xu, who posted a two-day score of 131 and led the Eagles to the team title.

Bacardi’s state runner-up finish after posting rounds of 8-under par 63 on Tuesday and 1-over 72 on Wednesday was a career-best, however, and the highest individual finish for a Palmer Trinity golfer all-time.

Bacardi, a University of Virginia commit, won multiple individual Youth Fair, district and regional crowns throughout her career and is a three-time Miami Herald Player of the Year.

Fort Lauderdale Pine Crest was the highest team finisher from South Florida after posting a team score of 616 to finish ninth overall. Miami Ransom Everglades placed 14th with a score of 645 and Carrollton finished 15th with a score of 654.

On the boys’ side, Pine Crest’s Alexander Weinberg was unable to repeat as individual state champion despite entering the second day in the lead.

Weinberg shot a 5-under 67 on Tuesday, but struggled to match that on Wednesday and finished with a round of 4-over 76 for a two-day total of 143. The score left him tied for fifth with Port St. Lucie Morningside’s Jeremy Hsu. Circle Christian’s Luke Gossett won the individual title after shooting a combined 139 over two days.

Weinberg, who is committed to Duke, became Pine Crest’s first state individual champion last season. His efforts helped Pine Crest finish sixth as a team - the best among South Florida schools. Ransom Everglades finished 11th overall and Miami Florida Christian finished 14th.
