Braddock cross-country sweeps districts. Belen perfect again. Carrollton swimming makes history. Plus more

In underdog fashion, the Miami Braddock boys’ and girls’ cross-country teams swept the District 8-4A titles at Larry & Penny Thompson Park in Miami.

Miami Doral Academy finished ahead of Braddock’s girls’ team throughout the season, but the Bulldogs rebounded with an impressive victory at districts. They were led by senior Jasmine Trotz, who placed fourth of 90 runners in 20:14.7.

This marked the ninth district championship for the Braddock girls’ cross-country program.

Braddock also received solid efforts from Top 10 finishers Madison Chin (sophomore), Kayla Feeney (senior) and Martina Buitrago (sophomore). Sophomore Samantha Lompar was 12th to help key the victory.

Doral freshman Nicole Lewis won the girls’ individual district title, covering the 3.1-mile course in 19:30.6. Coral Gables junior standout Avril Donner was the runner-up in 19:34.5, and Coral Reef senior Samantha Ruiz took third in 19:52.3.

The Braddock boys’ team won its first district title in 33 years, placing ahead of several teams, including runner-up Miami Columbus.

Last season Columbus edged the Bulldogs by one point for the district championship. This time Braddock posted 34 points, while Columbus totaled 61. Lowest score wins.

Columbus senior Anthony Scarcello won the boys’ individual title at 16:25.5. Braddock’s Mauricio Escalona (junior) and Jacob Castanedo (sophomore) were second and third, respectively. Teammates Liano Lacayo (sophomore) and Luccas Torres (junior) placed Top 10, and Lucas Knight (freshman) was Top 15 en route to the team championship.

More district cross-country

For the second consecutive season, the Miami Belen Jesuit boys’ cross-country team posted a perfect score (15 points) at the District 8-3A Cross-Country Championships at Larry and Penny Thompson Park in Miami.

In the girls’ division, Miami Lourdes nearly equaled Belen’s effort, scoring 16 points for the girls’ team title.

This marks Belen’s 21st consecutive district championship and 43rd in program history.

Belen sophomore Marcelo Mantecon won the 3.1-mile race in record fashion in 15:31, two seconds better than the previous mark (15:33 by Elliot Clemente in 2011). Mantecon is ranked 11th in the country by Milesplit and 14th by Dyestat.

Belen senior Justin Ruiz (2nd), sophomore Armando Cruz (3rd), senior Diego Magarino (4th) and senior Michael Brunet (5th) completed the perfect effort in a field of 87 runners.

The Wolverines, which took 10 of the top 11 spots, qualified to compete at the Region 4-3A Championship on Saturday in Stuart.

Senior Alejandro de Bastos of runner-up Pembroke Pinbes Charter, ran 16:43.10 to break the Belen chain, placing seventh. Senior Dudley Moise of Hollywood McArthur was 12th in 17:23.60, followed by Pembroke Pines Charters’s Gian Carlo de Bastos (sophomore) and Adam Stewart (sophomore).

District swimming

The Miami Carrollton girls’ swim team won the District 12-1A Championship, and Ransom Everglades won the boys’ team title in a meet hosted by Carrollton.

This marks the first time Carrollton has won a district team title in girls’ swimming in 14 seasons under the direction of Coach Corinna Ahearn, breaking Ransom’s stronghold on the championship. The Raiders still celebrated a team title in the boys’ division, while the girls were runners-up.

Olivia Arriete, Evelyn Bussey, Mila Fanjul and Isabelle Wilson led the champion Cyclones. Lincoln Broad, Nohan Gomez, Jay Holly and Connor Verbrugge guided the champion Raiders.

Top swimmers also included Santiago Balbisportal and Rafael Frable of Cutler Bay, Julian Lozabo of Riviera Prep, Sophia Linfield and Kiera Rampersad of Ransom Everglades.

At District 12-2A, Camila Correa and Nicole Macedo led girls’ team champ MAST over runner-up Gulliver Prep, which won eight events. Boys’ champ Belen was topped by brothers Alec and Christopher De Angulo and Ariel Gutierrez over runner-up MAST, which won seven events.

He also teamed with Luis Vazquez, Giancarlo Padon and Bryan Toledo to place fourth in the boys’ 200 medley relay at 1:50.36. South Broward’s Ariela Brody was seventh in girls’ 500 free at 6:31.68.
