More district golf

Gia Culler-Guerra of Miami Springs won her sixth consecutive district title in girls’ golf.

Amazingly, this senior standout is undefeated since seventh grade, competing against high school varsity golfers. She placed second as a sixth grader. From sixth grade through her sophomore year, she played for Mater Lakes Academy, before transferring to Miami Springs

Culler-Guerra shot 3-under par 69 at the District 16-2A Tournament at Killian Greens Golf Club in Kendall. It wasn’t easy as she and SLAM sophomore Brianna Breto tied after 18 holes. Culler-Guerra needed a 4-hole playoff against Breto to become district champ again.

In the bonus golfing, Culler-Guerra and Breto played Hole No.18 (par 5) tying three times, each scoring par, birdie and birdie to force another extra hole. They then went to Hole No.17 (par 3), and Culler-Guerra bested Breto by parring to win it.

SLAM senior Dariana Breto, her older sister, was third at 71.

Culler-Guerra, who committed to play NCAA Division I golf for Florida Gulf Coast University on a full scholarship in Fort Myers, has amassed quite a medal count during her illustrious high school career. She won 10 major individual titles, including back-to-back region championships.

Culler-Guerra can add to that impressive list at regionals at the Eagle Trace Golf Club in Coral Springs.

The Miami Belen Jesuit boys’ golf team tied the school record for team score (290) while capturing its third district championship in the past six seasons under Head Coach Carlos Rodriguez (2019, 2020, 2024) at Killian Greens Golf Club.

Senior Lorenzo Rodriguez fired 9-under par 63 to capture his third individual district title (2021, 2023, 2024) in the past four seasons. Sophomore Ryan Nieto (73) finished as runner-up, and junior Danny Garcia (76), sophomore Matthew Gonzalez (78), and freshman Beckett Castro (79) also played well to help win the team championship. Those five golfers placed in the Top 10.

The Wolverines advance to regionals at The National in Ave Maria. They are vying for a school record sixth consecutive state appearance.
