BCAA and GMAC cross-country champs crowned. Plus Archbishop McCarthy wins golf event and more

Led by individual champion Alexander Lopez, Miami Columbus won the boys’ team title at the GMAC Cross-Country Championships at Tropical Park in Miami.

Lopez scaled the 3.1-mile course in 16:23.10. Teammate Anthony Scarcello took runner-up honors in 16:28.00. Luis Marti was third for runner-up Miami Coral Reef.

On the girls’ side, Avril Donner of champion Miami Coral Gables continues to run well, winning the individual title in 19:36.10. Samantha Ruiz of runner-up Coral Reef was runner-up in 20:09.20. TERRA’s Abbigail Laine was third in 20:45.70.

BCAA cross-country

Fort Lauderdale Dillard won the girls’ team title, and Pembroke Pines Charter won the boys’ team title at the BCAA Cross-Country Championships at Markham Park in Sunrise.

Eighth grader Shynah Collins led champion Dillard by finishing first in the girls’ race at 18:54.18. Senior Grace Finneran of runner-up Davie St. Thomas Aquinas was second at 19:02.13.

Dillard has won a few other meets this season including the Florida Runners Invitational ROC (Race of Champions) in Lakeland.

On the boys’ side, senior Alejandro De Bastos guided champion Pembroke Pines Charter by winning the 3.1-mile race in 15:54.97. Senior Joushua Gammage of third place Dillard was second at 16:07.47.

Coral Springs senior Jeffrey Belizaire, who won the race last season, was third at 16:33.93. Coral Springs Taravella placed second in the team standings.

Note: Last season, Collins was fourth as a seventh grader at 19:55.20, and Finneran was third at 19:30.50. Same as this season, Dillard and St. Thomas Aquinas were 1-2 in the team category.

For the boys in 2023, Belizaire took first at 16:17.80. De Bastos was second at 16:30.30 and Gammage 10th at 17:01.40. Pembroke Pines Charter was fourth and Taravella sixth.

Golf

Gavin Duffy of Southwest Ranches Archbishop McCarthy shot 1-under par 71 to win the Maverick Boys’ Golf Invitational, hosted by Archbishop McCarthy at Eagle Trace Golf Club in Coral Springs.

Duffy led the Mavericks to the team title. It marks his second invitational win and fifth medalist honors of the season.Teammates Jake Haeflinger and Patrick Pinkey did well, too, tying for sixth and 10th, respectively.

Axel Monssoh of runner-up Miami Ransom Everglades was second at 1-over par 73. Kevin Corzo of Miami Floirda Christian tied for third in individual results, and Victor Herrera ignited Miami Columbus to third in the team standings.
