Poll: Who should be the Miami Herald’s High School Athlete of the Week? (Oct. 21)
South Florida’s top athletes were recognized last week in the sports of bowling, cross-country, golf, and volleyball.
This week, we continue a feature where we ask you to vote for the best performer of the week from bowling, cross-country, golf, swimming, and volleyball in Broward and Miami-Dade counties.
Take our poll below to cast your vote. The poll will be open until Thursday, Oct. 24, around 10 p.m. You may vote as often as you like until then.
Here are the candidates:
▪ Jennifer Buaiz, Miami Reagan volleyball: had 26 assists, 6 kills and 17 digs in helping lead the Bison over Key West in a district semifinal.
▪ Briana Canahuate, Miami Ferguson bowling: the senior led the Falcons to their third consecutive GMAC championship. Ferguson went undefeated in the double-elimination tournament to remain unbeaten on the season.
▪ Gia Culler-Guerra, Miami Springs golf: the senior won the GMAC Girls’ Golf Tournament with a 2-over par 74, making her a two-time champion.
▪ Avril Donner, Miami Coral Gables cross-country: the junior helped the Cavaliers win the team championship by winning the individual title at the 305 Cross-Country Classic at Larry & Penny Thompson Park in Miami. She scaled the 3.1-mile course in 19:52, finishing first of 109 female runners.
▪ Joseph Fernandez, Miami Columbus golf: the junior led the Explorers to the team title by placing second at the GMAC Boys’ Golf Tournament. He shot 75, just one shot off the winner.
▪ Alfonso Goyeneche, Miami MAST golf: the senior won the GMAC Boys’ Golf Tournament with a 2-over par 74.
▪ Mateo Sotelo, Miami Divine Savior cross-country: the senior won the 305 Cross-Country Classic at Larry & Penny Thompson Park in Miami. He covered the 3.1-mile course in 16 minutes 54 seconds, besting a field of 143 male runners.
▪ Rashawn Viart, Miami Ferguson bowling: the junior led the Falcons to their third consecutive GMAC championship. After losing their first match of the season (to Columbus in the double-elimination tourney), Ferguson regrouped, advancing to the finals where they beat Columbus twice for the title.
▪ Isabelle Wilson, Miami Carrollton swimming: the senior won all her events -- individual and relay -- while setting two meet records at the Belen Invitational. She set those records in the 200 free (1:58.94) and 500 free (5:08.79). She also swam backstroke in the winning 200 medley relay (1:59.94) and started the winning 400 freestyle relay (3:50.24).
▪ Anzhelika Yakzhina, Hollywood Chaminade-Madonna volleyball: had 12 kills, 2 aces, 1 block, 14 digs, and 10 serve receive in helping lead the Lions over Avant Garde Academy in a district semifinal.
▪ Violette Zayas, Miami Mourning volleyball: had 11 kills and 23 digs in helping lead the Sharks over Plantation American Heritage in a district semifinal.
