American Heritage volleyball, Belen cross-country, Columbus golf, Ferguson bowling and more

The Columbus boys’ golf team won the VBHS Fighting Indians Invitational at Sandridge Golf Club in Vero Beach.

In a field of 15 teams, the Explorers bested some of the top teams in the state. They scored 300, eight shots ahead of runner-up St. Cloud, nine shots in front of Windermere and 10 shots better than Southwest Ranches Archbishop McCarthy.

Columbus was led by sophomore Hector Perez Sainz who shot a 3-under par 69 to win the individual title on a match of cards with Spencer Ives of Naples Community School who also scored 69.

Perez Sainz was outstanding, reaching 4-under par at one point on a tough Sandridge course.

Teammates Eduardo Perez (sophomore), Nick Rousseau (senior) and Victor Herrera (senior) did well, too, tying for 18th at 77 en route to the team championship.

Cross-country

The defending champion Belen Jesuit boys’ cross-country team won the 25th annual Great American Cross-Country Festival on a warm Saturday morning at WakeMed Park in Cary, North Carolina.

With 147 teams from 22 states, the event of more than 4,000 athletes was one of the largest in its history.

The amazing Wolverines cross-country program continued to dominate, toaling 152 points, 48 points better than runner-up North Carolina Marvin Ridge H.S.

Belen sophomore Marcelo Mantecon won the individual title, covering the 3.1-mile course in 14 minutes, 40.2 seconds. That was 10 seconds faster than runner-up Soheib Dissa, a senior from Connecticut Newtown H.S.

Mantecon burst from the gun start, clocking a blazing 4:25 opening mile -- ahead of some of the fastest runners in the Northeast and Southeast. With just a kilometer remaining, Mantecon made his final move, breaking away from the pack to finish the 5K course in an impressive 14:40.2, which is an astounding eight seconds faster than his previous best on the same course. That time is also his 5K (3.1-mile) personal best.

In second for Belen was senior Joseph Socarras, who finished 42nd overall in 15:37.2. Senior teammate Justin Ruiz ran 15:42.5, good for 45th of 386 runners. The Wolverines posted a team average of 15:34.

Fort Lauderdale Westminster Academy senior Jonathan Pena did very well, placing 18th in 15:17.3.

The next challenge for Belen is Saturday, October 12 at the FSU Invitational Prestate Meet at Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee.

Volleyball

The Plantation American Heritage volleyball team won back-to-back matches by defeating host Pembroke Pines Somerset Academy and visiting Pembroke Pines Franklin Academy.

The Patriots, which recorded 23 aces against Franklin Academy, improved to 14-6, and according to MaxPreps, they are ranked No.9 in the Florida 4A classification. This is the highest ranking the program has ever reached via Maxpreps.

Prior, American Heritage hosted a Spike Out Cancer fundraising match during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The Patriots, competing against Miami Country Day, raised $1,500 for the Pink Angels Foundation of Memorial Hospital in Hollywood.

Miami Ferguson and Miami Krop bowling are undefeated in boys’ and girls’ divisions.

Ferguson boys and girls are 11-0 with each posting a victory over Miami Coral Reef during Senior Night at Bird Bowl in Miami.

Krop boys improved to 7-0 after defeating Miami High and Miami Beach. The girls are 6-0, following their wins over Miami High and Miami Beach.
