Gulliver boys, Southridge girls win bowling tourneys. Divine volleyball first again. Plus more

The Miami Gulliver Prep boys’ team won the Independent and Charter Schools Bowling Invitational at Bird Bowl in Miami, and the Miami Southridge girls’ team won the Miami-Dade County Youth Fair Bowling Tournament also at Bird Bowl.

Youth fair bowling

At the youth fair tournament, Miami Ferguson (1,899 pins), Southridge (1,821), Miami TERRA (1,761) and Miami Palmetto (1,713) placed top four of 19 girls’ teams, qualifying for the semifinals.

Ferguson, seeded one, then beat fourth seed Palmetto, and second seed Southridge defeated third seed TERRA.

In the finals, Southridge bested Ferguson.

Individual winner Joysbeliz Reyes led the Spartans to the semifinals with a 613 high series, including a 215 high game. Halle Meltzer of Palmetto was second with a 423 series (166 high game). TERRA’s Tatiana Chin was third (410 series, 165 high game), followed by Isabella Jaramillo of Ferguson (408 series, 150 high game).

Other Top 10 individual finishers: 5. Eva Garcia (T) 403 series, 150 high game; 6. Daniela Ortiz (T) 399 series, 139 high game; 7. Karla Portillo (Ferg) 396 series, 152 high game; 8. Roseibel Mendoza (Cutler Bay) 394 series, 149 high game; 9. Briana Canahuate (Ferg) 394 series, 141 high game; 10. Erin Rodriguez (Cutler Bay) 390 series; 141 high game.

Other Top 10 team finishes: 5. Cutler Bay (1,675 pins); 6. Braddock (1,629); 7. COHEA (1,366); 8. Coral Park (1,327); 9. Sunset (1,311); 10. Miami Springs (1,275).

Independent & charter bowling

At the independent and charter schools event, Riley Prescott led champion Gulliver Prep by winning the individual title with a 581 high series, including a 225 high game.

Miami COHEA was runner-up.

In a double elimination format, Gulliver beat Miami Colonial and Homestead Keys Gate. COHEA defeated Miami Pinecrest Glades and Colonial and Keys Gate (after losing to Keys Gate). Gulliver eliminated COHEA in the finals for the title.

Gulliver’s Aaron Gold had a 208 high game and 567 series, and teammate James Leano added a 150 high game and 376 series. COHEA’s Donovan Armstrong scored a 134 high game and 362 series.

On the girls’ side, COHEA was the team champion, and Pinecrest Glades was runner-up.

Krystal Fernandez led champion COHEA as the top overall bowler with a 373 high series.

Volleyball

The Miami Divine Savior Academy volleyball team won another tournament.

Divine Savior went 4-0 to finish first in the Florida Christian Invitational in Miami. Ruth Martinez, who was named tournament MVP, led the Sharks.

Divine Savior (16-2) beat TERRA Environmental 25-13, 29-27; Ferguson 25-10, 25-15; and Miami Mater Lakes Academy 25-21, 25-20; and edged Weston Sagemont 25-13, 20-25, 16-14 in an exciting battle.

In a five-set thriller, Divine Savior came from behind to defeat Gulliver Prep by winning the fourth and fifth sets.
