Cross-country

For the second consecutive season, the Miami Belen Jesuit boys’ cross-country team traveled to Alabama and won the Champions Division of the Southern Showcase Invitational at the John Hunt Cross-Country Park in Huntsville.

Even in victory, it was a tough day for the Wolverines as course footing conditions and a busy training block contributed to a less-than-ideal team performance. The course had some muddy areas because of remnants from Hurricane Francine.

Belen scored 67 points while averaging 15:40 which was more than enough to capture the top spot in a field of 33 teams. Huntsville was runner-up with 119.

Again leading the way for Belen was sophomore Marcelo Mantecon, who was third overall (of 258 runners) with a 3.1-mile 5k time of 15:00.20. Teammate Joseph Socarras placed 12th in 15:39.06, and Justin Ruiz was 14th in 15:42.64. Belen’s Diego Magarino took 22nd in 16:01.89, and Armando Cruz 27th in 16:10.

This was the first meet out of state this season for Belen, allowing the runners to compete against some of the other top ranked runners and teams in the Southeast.

Luke Alverson of James Clemens in Madison, Alabama won the race in 14:49.25, followed by Aiden Monistere of Parkview Baptist of Baton Rouge, Louisiana in 14:57.44 and then Mantecon.

Next for Belen is the Spanish River Invitational in Boca Raton.
