Too close to call cross-country BCAA champion
A new BCAA boys’ cross-country individual champion will be crowned on Friday, and it’s too close to call who leaves Markham Park with the coveted prize.
Pines Charter should figure prominently in the outcome with Tomas Gimenez-Beron, a transfer from Nova, the top seed (15:52), and No. 3 Carlos Penaranda (15:58) expected to lead a three-man sprint to the finish line with No. 2 Aquinas’ Bryce Statham (15:54). At the 2013 BCAA championships, Statham finished third and Gimenez-Beron finished fourth.
If either of those favorites falter, Douglas’ Anthony Ramcharran (16:23) and Charter’s Daniel Penaranda (16:29) could find themselves in position to pull off an upset.
From a strategy standpoint, it will be interesting to see whether, the Jaguars and Raiders, boys’ co-favorites, opt to push up front early or stay off the lead and make their move late.
A victory over the Raiders, the reigning Class 4A state champions and a fixture in the BCAA champions’ circle, would undoubtedly be a huge psychological boost for Pines Charter leading into the District 15-3A championships in two weeks.
Nobody would blame the BCAA if it already has Alexa Cruz’s name etched on the girls’ championship trophy. The St. Thomas Aquinas’ reigning Class 4A state champion is ranked No. 2 in the state (17:56) and should easily clinch her third consecutive BCAA title.
The Trish Butler-coached Raiders are expected to extend its BCAA dominance on the girls’ side, with Margaret Schloss and Lily Kloepfer both projected to place in the top three.
