Poll: Who should be the Miami Herald’s High School Athlete of the Week? (Sept. 16)

South Florida’s top athletes were recognized last week in the sports of bowling, cross-country, golf and volleyball.

This week, we continue a feature where we ask you to vote for the best performer of the week from those sports in Broward and Miami-Dade counties.

Take our poll below to cast your vote. The poll will be open until Thursday, Sept. 19, around 10 p.m. You may vote as often as you like until then.

Here are the candidates:

Vanessa Camacho, (Plantation) American Heritage volleyball: Camacho had 10 kills, 32 receptions and 22 digs in a five-set volleyball win over (Miami) LaSalle 20-25, 25-21, 23-25, 27-25, 15-11 and 1 service points, 15 digs and 7 kills in a win over (Delray Beach) American Heritage.

Anson Dover, Miami Ransom Everglades golf: Dover shot 38 for medalist honors against (Miami) Westminster Christian at LaGorce Country Club (par 35) in Miami. The Raiders beat Westminster Christian 160-167.

Mia Gold, Fort Lauderdale Pine Crest volleyball: Gold led the Pine Crest to fifth of 32 teams at the Nike Tournament of Champions in Gainesville. The Panthers went 5-1 with Gold recording 73 kills, a .340 hitting percentage, 5.25 kills per set, 23 digs, and 4 aces.

Matthew Gonzalez, Miami Belen Jesuit golf: Gonzalez had a breakout performance with a personal best 75 at the Jenkins Invitational in Lakeland. He helped the Wolverines place fifth of 25 teams.

Emma Jaramillo, Miami Ferguson bowling: Jaramillo scored a high game 166 and high series 433 to lead unbeaten Ferguson over (Miami) Cutler Bay 7-0.

Harper Kiss, Fort Lauderdale Pine Crest golf: Kiss won medalist honors with 40 against (Fort Lauderdale) Cardinal Gibbons at Palm Aire CC, Cypress Course (9 holes) in Pompano Beach. The Panthers beat Cardinal Gibbons 167-210.

Nicole Lewis, Doral Academy cross-country: Lewis was sixth of 304 runners in 19:11.6 at the Florida Horse Park Cross-Country Invitational in Ocala. She helped the Firebirds take seventh of 44 teams.

Marcelo Mantecon, Miami Belen Jesuit cross-country: Mantecon set a record while winning the 11th annual Florida Horse Park Cross-Country Invitational in Ocala. He helped lead the Wolverines to the invitational team title by scaling the 3.1-mile race in a course-record 15:06.6.

Maria Martinez, Weston Cypress Bay volleyball: Martinez had 6 kills, 3 blocks, 4 aces, and 6 digs in a win over Cooper City as the Lightning remain unbeaten.

Helenn Montilla, Miami LaSalle volleyball: Montilla had 12 kills, 8 blocks and 2 aces in a five-set victory over (Miami) Carrollton 22-25, 25-15, 25-20, 20-25, 15-12.

Abigail Nunez, Miami Varela volleyball: Nunez had 15 aces, 34 digs and 10 assists in a 25-20, 15-25, 26-24, 25-12 victory over (Miami) iMater.

Jesus Prieto, Miami Ferguson bowling: Prieto scored a high game 269 to lead unbeaten Ferguson over (Miami) Hialeah 7-0. He also posted the high series at 644.
