Belen cross-country wins again. Cypress Bay, Norland volleyball undefeated. Plus more results
The (Miami) Belen Jesuit boys’ cross-country team continues to dominate major meet invitationals across the state.
Coming off a strong performance in northeast Florida, Belen traveled to central Florida to further test its depth and strength.
The Wolverines finished first scoring just 22 points at the 11th annual Florida Horse Park Invitational in Ocala. Belen runners average time was 15 minutes 34 seconds.
The varsity invite field included 47 teams from all classifications. Buchholz (Gainesville) was runner-up at 105, followed by Ponte Vedra at 189.
Once again leading the way for Belen was sophomore Marcelo Mantecon who won the 3.1-mile race in a course-record 15:06.6. Teammate Joseph Tiago Socarras, a senior, was third in a personal best 15:27.2. The next three outstanding scoring runners for Belen were Justin Ruiz (5th, 15:42.2), Diego Magarino (6th, 15:45.3) and Armando Cruz (7th, 15:48.3).
(Miami) Columbus placed fourth and (Miami) Braddock sixth. (Miami) Doral Academy was 17th and Miami Sunset 30th of 50 teams.
Diego Eseverri of Columbus was 13th in 16:07.7, and Gabriel Carr of Sunset was 18th in 16:15.6. Anthony Scarcello of Columbus was 21st in 16:17.4. Sebastian Coraspe of Doral Academy was 26th in 16:19.8 and Jacon Castanedo of Braddock 27th in 16:20.6. Braddock’s Mauricio Escalona was 29th of 387 runners in 16:22.3.
In the girls’ race, Doral Academy placed seventh of 44 teams. (Jacksonville) Bolles edged Ponte Vedra by two points for the team title.
Braddock finished ninth and Miami Sunset 33rd. Doral Academy’s Nicole Lewis was sixth of 304 runners in 19:11.6, and teammate Julieta Baudini 29th in 20:06.1. Braddock’s Kayla Feeney was 57th in 20:54.9, and teammate Madison Chin 61st in 20:58.5.
Up next for Belen is the Showcase Invitational on Saturday in Huntsville Alabama. This race will be the Wolverines first out-of-state race this season.
Belen is ranked No.5 in the country by Milesplit. Mantecon is individually ranked 15th in America. This marks the first time a Belen runner has been ranked inside the Top 25 by Milesplit.
Golf
In its best performance of the season, the (Miami) Belen Jesuit boys’ golf team finished fifth of 25 teams at the Jenkins Invitational in Lakeland.
Senior Lorenzo Rodriguez (73) led the Wolverines, and sophomore Matthew Gonzalez had a breakout performance with a personal best 75. Junior Danny Garcia (80) and freshmen Beckett Castro (78) and Marley Caudle (81) also shot well.
Belen next competes on Wednesday against (Miami) Florida Christian.

The (Miami) Norland girls’ volleyball team improved to 7-0 with a victory over Edison.
The Vikings also defeated South Miami, (Miami) Jackson, (Miami) Central, (Miami) Killian, (Miramar) Somerset Academy and (Miami) Northwestern.
(Weston) Cypress Bay started the season with five consecutive victories, beating (Coconut Creek) Monarch, South Plantation, (Pembroke Pines) West Broward, (Fort Lauderdale) Cardinal Gibbons and Cooper City.
