Belen golf wins in Howey-in-the-Hills. Plus football results, LaSalle volleyball and more

The Belen Jesuit boys’ golf team defeated (Tampa) Jesuit 314-319 in the 2024 AMDG Cup at Mission Resort & Club in Howey-in-the-Hills, home of the FHSAA State Golf Championships.

Senior Lorenzo Rodriguez, the 2023 Class 2A state champion, was the individual champion, with a 3-under 69, besting second by five strokes.

Freshman Beckett Castro was big with a good scoring round for the Wolverines that helped secure the team title.

The Wolverines head to Lakeland on Monday to compete in the Jenkins Invitational.

Football

Archbishop Carroll football won its home opener against ABF Academy-Hialeah 50-0.

Josh Rivera, Davian Pabon and Will Secola each scored. The Bulldogs rushed for a total of 325 yards on 25 carries.

Secola paced Archbishop Carroll with 97 rushing yards. Justin Matias and Isaiah Suarez led the defense with six tackles each. Matias returned an interception 26 yards for a touchdown.

Archbishop Carroll (2-0) plays at Palmer Trinity (1-1) on Friday afternoon.

Freshman quarterback Neimann Lawrence was 22-of-30 passing for 305 yards and three touchdowns, and he also ran for two scores as Ransom Everglades opened the season with a 42-28 road victory over Westminster Christian.

The Raiders host Coral Springs Charter (0-3) on Friday.

Basketball

The 2024 Junior Orange Bowl Basketball Classic, featuring eight boys’ teams and eight girls’ teams, is Dec. 27, 28 and 30 at Westminster Christian School, 6855 SW 152nd St., Palmetto Bay.

Eight games begin at 10 a.m. on Dec. 27. Championship games are 7:30 p.m. (girls) and 9 p.m. (boys) on Dec. 30.

This is the 32nd edition of this annual event, which has welcomed teams from 21 states, the District of Columbia, Canada, Puerto Rico and Slovenia.

This year’s field includes five newcomers as well as four prior Junior Orange Bowl Basketball Classic champions.

The boys’ division consists of Mater Lakes Academy, Norland, Palmetto, Mount Saint Joseph (Maryland), Pembroke Pines Charter, Roman Catholic (Pennsylvania), Westminster Christian, Woodward Academy (Georgia).

The girls’ division consists of Bradley Central (Tennessee), Doral Academy, Magnificat (Ohio), Miami Senior, SLAM Academy, Southridge, Springboro (Ohio), Woodward Academy (Georgia).
